My best guess on the discoloration is residual threadlocker used on the thumb stud. I just cleaned it with a little rubbing alcohol and it removed some of it but not all. I imagine it will all come off with a solvent, but it's really hard to see. I took the pictures with my Nikon DSLR under bright light to show the true condition and never noticed it until the pics were posted. I bought the knife new and it's been the factory box ever since.
