Rummaging through my reloading pile I found a can of about 300 .452 cast 265 grain bullets. These are commercial cast RNFP bullets with blue lube. I want to load them in my 45 Colt Blackhawk and my Rossi 92. In neither case do I want them to exceed 1100 FPS. Just plinking loads.
I don't remember loading these bullets before and I do not show them in my data books for those guns. Probably I picked them up in a buy and just forgot about them. Anyway, the powders are 231, CFE pistol and Trail boss. Truth be known, I haven't found much accuracy in Trail Boss in the things I've tried it in. But I haven't used it in pistols before, just 45-70. mostly

Sounds like a good reason to buy a can of Unique and use it up 10gr at a time.

7.0gr of Unique is my plinking load. 8.0gr for general purpose use. Both loads are accurate in my .45 Colt Redhawk with 265gr or 255gr RNFP.

Ed Yep. I use 7.3 grains and won't exceed the 1100fps shooting them in the rifle.

Either of the two loads mentioned or most used load is 5.3-5.5 grs of Trail Boss. This load is a little under the max but Trail Boss does not like to be compressed in the least and this seems to give plenty of room in the case. Velocity is in the 700 fps range so is a very mild recoiling load.
I think Trail Boss is more accurate in pistol cartridges than rifle but I have found it to be "usable" in the handful of rifle cartridges I've tried it in. I've always been able to beat Trail Boss in accuracy with other powders at somewhat higher velocities but I haven't found a powder for low recoil/velocity loads to match it.

I have come to love Titegroup in those 700 to 900 fps loads. I use it in 38 Spec, 45 acp, 41 mag, and 327. It burns very cleanly. Not too much flash. And it is very economical.
I would suggest 6.0 gr with your 165s in the 45 lc for about 750 to 800 fps.
If you want to go above 800 fps, you would need a different powder.

Ed Yep. I use 7.3 grains and won't exceed the 1100fps shooting them in the rifle. I use 8 and 9 grains with the 270 SAA bullet. 7 and 8 would be great.

...7 and 8 would be great. 7.0gr Unique under a Speer swaged 230gr RN is the cat's ass for teaching non-shooters how to use a revolver. Very accurate in thee different .45 Colts, a Freedom Arms Mod 97, a Ruger Redhawk, and a Ruger Super Blackhawk. It do make for some dirty brass, but it's worth it! Ed

Sounds like a good reason to buy a can of Unique and use it up 10gr at a time. There you have it! Or load the Unique a grain or two lower for less kick / more fun .....
