O ring around the screw stud that holds the forearm "free floats" the barrel, it helps.

Did a reseach before I asked - some folks say they did this/that/the other didn't see much improvement . Going to give a few of the more simple things a go - getting into bedding and some of the other stuff like soldering support metal in place etc. - not sure how far I'll go . Wanted to see if anybody had went all in and it paid off . O-Rings , trigger job , bed the rail , lap rings first . Thanks for the replies .

have one in 35 whelen, pretty much sprayed factory ammo into a 6 inch pattern from the box. did all the deal, o-ringed the forearm screw.cleared the forend from the frame a little. lapped the rail to the barrel then bedded it with loktite red. (use burris signature rings, no lapping and does not mar your scope)trigger work and extra power hammer spring. now it shoots allright with rem 200 corelocks. does better with my handloads 2 moa with the factory ammo and 1.5moa with handloads. 200ftx @ 2250fps kills deer and hogs like lightning at 200 yards. this is a light loading that doesnt kick much and is equal to a hot 35 remington. you can shove a 200 grainer to 2800 if you want but doesn't take that level of authority to kill deer and hogs. i use it for my mississippi primitive weapon, 35 cal or better exposed hammer breech loading single shot. is legal for primitive here.

I forgot about the 35 whelen Handi - cool cartridge , remember reading about they could be used in Ms . primitive season . A 444marlin is a rimmed straight off the press 30-06 case I reckon that has a lot to do with it staying around . Never had a rifle bigger than 30 caliber - really liking this Handi little rifle , going to make it my go-to day/night hog at the feeder rifle . Going to put a 4x12-50 Leupold VXR scope on it .
Prices on them have went way up seen a 50 cal. asking price $500+ ,300blk-out $400 just browsing them - not looking to buy . Thanks again folks ...

handis do work better with rimmed cartridges, automatic no miss headspacing vs bottleneck rimless than can be hit or miss depending on who was running the chambering reamer that day.. heres a good alternative to the vxr, ive got 2 of em. cant tell any difference between them and my vx3's closeout and a good deal on a good scope. https://www.natchezss.com/burris-fullfield-e1-rifle-scope-3-9x40mm-illum-3p-4-reticle-matte.html

Trigger job, forearm, bedding the sight base and crown, those are about it. Then it comes down to chamber and rifling, which you can’t do much about (except lapping the bore). If you handload, you can set your COL based on throat / rifling distance. D and T Gunsmithing has a forum for H&R / NEF, if go through the old posts there is one that shows you step-by-step how float and bed the forearm. Grey Beard Outdoor also has a forum and there is some useful information in the “stickies”.

Rest the action on the front bag. Float the forend or install an o-ring. Trigger job. I have only seen one Handi Rifle that wouldn't respond to tuning. A buddy had two Handis in .243. One shot well and the other would not group under baseball groups. The .444 is reputed to be one of the more accurate barrels. The .30-30 is usually the easiest to get to shoot.
