Mine would have to be the 300 R.U.M. ... I can reload it like it's 4 different rifle cartridges, 308, 30-06, 300 Win., & The 300 RUM.

Because it's too practical, and at the same time, not at all practical. Who wants to re-sight in their rifle, or regulate their loads to hit same POI when you can buy another 3 rifles? I'm new to it, but I may be fond of the 30-284.

In the '70s my favorite (and only) rifle was my .30-06.
In the '80s and '90s my favorite cartridge/rifle was my .30-06 re-chambered to .30 Gibbs.
For nostalgia, my favorite is my .30-30 Win Model 94.
My favorite steel gong plinking rifle is my .308 Win.
My overall favorite cartridge/rifle is my .300 Weatherby Vanguard, and it rings the 400 m gong with authority!

I never.met a .308 owner that walked away from that cartridge. I cannot say that about any other cartridge apart from maybe the 7x57. Myself, I have never owned one, but have seen many at work in the field and also have used review rifles so chambered. My own rack only has space for the .30/06 and the .30/30 for forest work though I have owned or used most of the other .30's. John

308 for sure. My first centerfire rifle was a Remington Model 742 in 308. I've had several other 308s since. My current 308 is a Tikka T-3 Hunter. It shoots very nicely and comes close to matching my 30-06s in power, with less recoil. It's also lighter than my 30-06s. Accuracy is superb. What's not to like?

The .30-'06 used to be a big boy, but now it is the Goldilocks of 30 caliber. Not to hard, not too soft, not too hot, not too cold, not too big, not too small.

I started hunting with the 30-06 then moved to the 308 Norma and 300 Win mag . Then chambered 2 rifles in 308 Win .
If I could have only one I would pick the 308 Win for the all around do it all rifle.

I have been on culls where .308, .30/06, .300 Win, 7x57, 7mm RM and .257 Wby were all being used. One deer sized game they all achieved the same result so I guess this in a winter thread, I fell for it.
My real view is to look for a rifle you can't put down and worry about the chambering after that. I enjoy seeing a rack full of rifles and am conscious of eye appraisal before reaching the rack. Puts some fun into the mental justification to come.

I had a 308 once. Never had another. Can't say anything bad about the cartridge other than it did not interest me in the least sand I have about 20 others that are just as good if not better. 30 isn't really my caliber of choice but of those I've had the old 303 Savage was the one I liked best. Being chambered in an 1899 carbine didn't hurt it any either.

Can't find anything interesting about the .308, there are many chamberings that can do so much more. Rio7

The older I get, the more nostalgic I get; took the 20" Savage 1899H takedown in .303 Savage to the deer stand the last couple of years. But I do like the 114 in .30-06 for it versatility.

In .30 caliber like the .30-06 the best of all cartridges. Only the .308 Norma comes close for flexibility. I use it more than any other chambering.
I started hunting with a .300 Savage, moved to a .308 Win, then a .30-06. I shot 7.62x51 in the Marines as well. I also have and have used .30 Carbine, .30-30, .308 Norma Mag and .300 Weatherby available.

The only 30 cal. I have now is my dad 300 Sav. I shot it one time . I have had 3 30-06 . A 742 that jammed, a Remington 700 bolt that was the most accurate rifle I ever had and another S.S. Rem 700 that I didn't care for a whole lot. A 30-06 is a good caliber. If you load some stiff 180's , it will be so close to the 7MM Rem. mag that there is really no difference but much cheaper to shoot. Not that I care.
