I ve tried all the usual methods to remove mine in order to refinish the buttstock and they all have failed. Drilling it out does not seem to be an option and heating the head of the screw didn’t help. The screw head is not buggered since I bought a Lyman gunsmithing screwdriver set, but even Peg’s 260;lb son couldn’t get it to budge even with me helping.

Trying to locate the precise spot to try and drill from the lower tang seems iffy.

I wonder about heating the lower tang might cause it to loosen once it cooled.

Any experience with this problem. It’s a 1975 model.

An electric vibrating pencil is the best tool for stuck small screws, replace the sharp engraving point with an 1/8 inch hardened dowel pin, get a friend to twist the screw driver as you hold the pin on the screw driver flat, it works just like an impact tool on a small scale.

If a friend is unavailable, you can do this yourself if you have a rifle vise to hold the rifle tight while you twist and vibrate. smile

Well.... I bought some penetrating oil. Then I used the new screw I bought from Midway as a gauge to figure where the threads were inside the stock.

I drilled into the stock from the sides until I encountered metal and then pumped the oil into the holes. I’ve been repeating this process this evening and will let it soak tonight and try to remove it tomorrow. I used a 3/32 drill bit and the two holes are not noticable at all.

.

Sounds like Bubba at his best. Don't heat the screw head, hear the threads on the lower tang. If the threads are not visible as in pistol grip stocks, you may have to apply heat to the end of the tang while applying pressure to the screw head.
