I've got a model 24 , 22 mag over 20 gauge that occasionally suffers from a light primer strike particularly on the shotgun barrel usually just recock it and it will fire , the hammer seems "mushy" for lack of a better word when you begin to cock it , any do it yourself fixes out there or does it need to go to a gunsmith ?

Main spring possibly ? Had that with a Thompson Contender once and it was the hammer spring.

I bought one like that a number of years ago. Someone had cut the mainspring in hopes of lightening the trigger pull. A new spring and a trigger job and the thing went off every time as expected. Just could never warm up the gun. Bought a decent Euro Combo gun.

After the first shot the rest are just noise.

I had one like that15 years ago. spent about $100.00 on repairs.. it would shoot when testing at home ,but when going hunting it would not fire the shot gun...found out after I sold it that the gun was ok,, it was the goddam shells. I used cheap shells for testing, and 3 in mag for hunting.. FEDERALS that would not fire.(a new box) after I sold it I took a 20 ga single shot hunting and it would not fire the federal shells either. so check the shells before you do anything else. the box I had had bad primers in them. I have not bought any FEDERAL shells sense.

Valmets, CZ, BRNO, Biakal, Tikka, American Arms(Marrochi), Bernardelli(if you can find one) under a $K, an a bunch of others. There are number of them out there, you have to hunt for them and not be afraid of strange to us calibers. I shoot combo guns in 5.6x50R Magnum and 5.6x52R(22 Sav Highpower). MY drillings are 6.5x58R, 7x57R and 9.3x72R. 222 Rem's are common plus 6.5x57R, 7x65R, 8x57R and 9.3x74R in over the counter availible ammo. More modern one come in 243, 308, 30-06 , 30 Blazer, newer combo guns in modern chambering's just cost more money, if you leave out the Biakal's nice guns but under rated do to their origin.

The folks I know of that are using them for coyote hunting seem to be happy with them. They are a better thought out combo gun than the Savage 24, more accurate, shoot to the same point of aim, better adapted to a scope, two triggers and no hammer to cock.

Having used both Savage 24 and Baikal I'd agree with all of that. The Baikal is a much better combination gun than the Savage for all of those reasons, and a good sound gun. It also has hard-chromed bores for durability.
