WITH original Weaver K 2.5 (clear!) and swivels (original) real nice, too. CCH on handle all there, very minor dings in stock. I'm pleased!

Love the Stith and scope, nice grab! It's a 99EG though.

There was no model H during the 1950's, only EG, R (RS?), and F. Going by the slender fore arm it would be an EG. H's didn't survive re-introduction after WWII.
John, if it were a G there would be a takedown iron in front of the receiver. They weren't made as late as the 50's either.
Darn nice rifle regardless. I think the EG's were the best of the lot in that era.

According to Murray they made 2 H's, one from 1905 to 1919 and the other from 1923 to 1940. So, if it's a 1956, it's not an H, and if it's an H, it's not a 1956. Very pretty rifle.

OK, now I'm really confused. Serial # is 880xxx, according to the Savage book on page 135, it says made between 1956 7731xx and 1957 927469 and next to those numbers it says Letter "H" but I guess that's just a code on the handle? So I'll let you guys tell me what it is?

The H is for the 'lever boss date code' H = 1956. That is not the model type.
You do have a fairly rare gun in the 800K SN range however.

The 800,000 serial range are pretty rare rifles! they only made a few over 500 in that serial number range before starting the 900,000 serial numbers. nice find !!! Don

Lever boss code "H", puts it at 1956. I think your confusion is the difference between a model alpha and the LBC alpha which indicates year of manufacture starting in 1949.
Have I got that right guys?

I'm thinking you got the serial number wrong as well.
Got a pic of it?
All the 800's I've got jotted down start with 83X.

Here is a re-post of the message from JTC I received on the 800K SN range:
Mike and anyone interested. Here is a summary of the 800,000 S/N block. It seems apparent that the company set this block aside for some unknown reason as the dates are much earlier than lower serial numbers shipped a couple of years later. Second there are way less than 100K guns in this block. The first posted s/n is 834,000 and is followed by blank records up to 834,777. A blank record is where the numbers are posted and have no entry against them and of course no product either. The first entry is at S/N 834,778 and is dated 11/6/53. The following entries are mixed up to s/n 834899 and are dated 10 & 11 of 1953 with a sprinkle of some 1955 and 56 dates. 834900 to 834909 are blank. 834910 to 834994 have entries dated 10-1953 with some in 1954. 834995 to 835025 are blank. 835026 to 835262 are mixed entries with 10 & 11 1953 dates. 835263 to 835412 are blank. 835413 to 835451 Show entries for 8/9/10/11 of 1953. 835452 to 835520 are blank. 835521 to 835539 show entries for 10/1954 and 7/1954. 835540 to 836051 are blank. If I did my subtraction right this makes for 502 Model 99’s in this S/N block. The next entry is at 900000, which of course is where the new longer and open receivers to accommodate the .243, .308 and .358 Winchester rounds started. I hope this sheds some light, but not necessarily some answers, on this controversial series of numbers. Jack

Is that first number a poorly struck 6 that looks like an 8?
