Just saw that Hornady is adding the .348 Win to the LeverEvolution line this year. I haven't drank the FTX Kool-Aid, but it is nice to have another option for keeping the .348s fed.

They're claiming nearly 2600 fps with it but also said you may need a newer magazine follower for functioning of the last round out of the tube in some guns. Midway is listing it at $53 a box. Options are always nice, but glad I have plenty of bullets and brass for mine.

Ive got some new Winchester 348 brass. Im not a fan of the leverevolution in any caliber due to the brass being shorter and I don't think they perform all that great. Now I just gotta bite the bullet and buy me a 71.

Well that's f*c*ed up. I sure as heck have no desire to alter a classic rifle just to shoot a bullet that gives no real world advantage anyway. If I need more reach than a flat point .348 gives, I'll be carrying a scoped rifle anyway.

I guess since Winchester won't get off their arses to produce any more ammo, others are filling the spot. I say Thanks Hornady. Unfortunately, I have over a case of 348 ammo, So I probably won't be buying any.

Pull one gummy tip use that as your 1st round in the tube always.

1st round cants just enough sometimes between the slope of the rounded over shoulder on follower and mag tube wall and the gummy wedges, drags or hangs up.


Pulled gummy round shoots to same POI or just top off and keep it.

Didnt have problem with my 336 and the more blunt profile of the follower
But the pulled gummy solved the problem with my 94,s very rounded over profile follower.

Fortunately for me have 7 or 8 boxes of the old stuff put away, I don't even fire a practice round at the beginning of the season anymore.

Now to find some more Hornady 200 gr flat tip bullets for my old Winchester .33's.
Kind of sorry to have sold off the Browning 71 some years back but couldn't see having original Winchesters sit in the safe. Might consider trading one of my 71's for an original 86 in 45- something, already have a reproduction 86 in 45-70 that I'm happy with, just with it had the pretty Browning wood.

MY model 71 shoots them with out any problem, whent from 3" groups to 21/4" groups, FPS-2535 average 5 shots !!!!

That's not too bad. I chrony'd some 35 Rem FTX ammo a friend had in his Marlin a few years back and it was about 200 fps less than their claim.

The FTX bullet in 308 and 45 has worked extremely well for me harvesting game! Elk and deer!

I bought some just to have the brass as the loaded rounds were cheaper. Because of the point of the bullets, they tended to slike on the back of tbe last cartridge all the way opposite the loading gate in the reciever effectively jamming the cartridge in the gate. I found you have to keep the bullet tip on the primer in front of it as you insert it into the magazine. This is in a Browning 71
