I do quite a lot of business with these folks. Poke around their sites and see if you can use anything. There aren't too many places for us to shop.

Dang dude, I wish we could set up a business like Canadian Pharmacy. We in the U.S. can get our meds cheap from those Canadian Pharmacies. We could set up a mail order gun store and call it "Canadian Guns." Seriously, there's so many great guns there and the prices are fantastic!

Sir,

Took a quick look at the Londero website. Quick question: Why would a lever action .22 rifle and a bolt action 17HMR be considered "restricted" weapons ?

I can kinda figure out that some folks may not like the evil "black rifles". But, not clear why simple rimfire rifles fall into the same category ?

Not picking a fight. Just curious...

They aren't restricted. They were put in the handgun area by mistake I would think.

Worthwhile buying from them.

A couple of those sites you have listed look very useful.

Steve; good idea for a thread.

Despite living in Calgary for years most of my firearms business is done with

Prophet River Firearms in Lloydminster

And

Barton’s High Country Sports in Grand Prairie

Both are good shops with good people.

All the best GRF

Prophet River is a quality shop. Clay will also import for you, if you are after something south of the border.

I have used www.irunguns.ca for importing, and had no problems as well.

I had 3 buying experiences with them over the years and 2 of them were poor so I never look there anymore. In fairness it was probably 8-10 years ago but I still avoid shopping there. It's always been by phone.

The two places I always check out and have dealt with are Accuracy Plus in Ontario and Bashaw Sports in Alberta. I like Prophet River but they seem to be overpriced a lot of the time, great service though.

It's difficult to take the chance when you've had a few bad experiences with them. Once bitten, twice shy. My personal feeling is that there are plenty of other businesses that I will go to for what I need. I doubt Epps will go broke if neither you nor I shop there. smile

The last 15 years at least, I have found that by spending some time poking around the Internets, I can find the things I need at fair prices. I also ask friends of inquire on certain websites for suggestions, should I need something in particular.

Old Pud at Bashaw tried to pull a fast one on me quite a few years ago, before the days of CGN.

I got rigged up in a three way trade for guns. My end result was going to give me a pre64 M70 in 300H&H. When Pud found that out, he tried to get me out of the trade and get the 300 for himself. Little did he know that the other party in the 3 way trade was a friend of mine who informed me of Pud contacting him directly and attempting to deal me out.

I like Higginsons. Most of my powder orders go through Andrew. They have a bunch of other stuff too. You have to look through the catalogs to check everything out.

For example, I saved at last $200 a couple of years back, buying a target scope from there.

There are many good Canadian gun shops, but if I have to pick two to recommend it's Prophet River Firearms and Trade Ex. Both have been consistently excellent to deal with.

I’m in BC, and I use x-reload for most of my components. I also like using Northpro Sports for powder, and have gotten some great prices on Hodgdon powder from Swamp Donkey Outdoors in Alberta.
I recently bought a new CZ455 stainless/synthetic 22WMR from Durham Outdoors. The price was way lower than anywhere else I could find in Canada, and the shipping was flat rate cheap ($15 if I remember).

Wolverine Supplies is another great dealer. A long track record of excellent CS, IME.

Higginsons gets 95+% of my reloading budget. Great powder and projectile prices, and service.

Top of the morning to you sir, I trust it's warmed up a wee bit for you folks.

Kudos to Steve for the thread too as it's good to know who is decent to deal with for sure.

I've been involved with two rifles from Prairie Gun Traders and it could not have gone any smoother. They were, I will also note, one of the first places up here to get in a fast twist Ruger American in .223 and even so didn't require an arm or leg for me to gain possession of it.

For bullets I've dealt with Omineca Source for Sports - the one chap Mark who I've dealt with a number of times used to post here as Todd Bartell. They have been able to get Barnes bullets for me when they were unobtanium everywhere else north of the medicine line.

Lastly as others have mentioned, Clay Smiley at Prophet River was very good to deal with in two sales of collector rifles for me and the purchase of a scope - which had an issue and was returned without a hitch and replaced.

Anyway all the best to you saskfox and the rest of my Canuck brethren - don't think we have any cistern here...... wink

I was posted in Trenton in the late 90's, never got around to the drive.

Has been a couple or three years since I drove through there.
Always was a good spot to stop and poke around. Found some parts there a time or 2 that I couldn't find
anywhere else in Canada, fair price too!.

Are you still in the service? I spent some time in Cold Lake. Most of the guys would drive to Edmonton and spend their money there. Mind you, with the Internets, it's easy to spend your money where ever you want.

I found a place in Sylvan Lake, AB. Wasp Munitions. Has anyone bought from them?

On another thread I asked if anyone knew of a source for 223 Rem brass. I started searching again and found them. https://waspmunitions.ca

I ordered 500 processed IVI cases.

Hey Steve,
No, I retired in 2006. 26+ yrs as a Medic. Was in Shilo, Calgary, Edmonton and Trenton before retiring at Suffield and stayed in the area.
I work at Range Control as a civilian radio op. I do some writing, mostly fly tying but also hunting/conservation and the odd product review.
While posted in Edmonton, I hunted the Cold Lake area plenty. My hunting partner was posted there.

I see. I was 22 yrs in uniform. Baden, Chatham, Bagotville, Comox, and Borden. I was never posted to CL, but spent a lot of time there. I taught for 11 years at CFSATE Borden after I retired. Don't miss it.

I get the desire to visit Chatham, NB every once in a while, but then they have their bad storms and the urge passes. smile

I see that. For what I'd need, there are a bunch of properties from $60,000 to $120,000.

A few years before CFB Chatham closed, the radar base at St. Margarets closed. It is about 15 mi. south on Hwy 11. The base and its contents were sold off to whoever came up with the cash. I could have bought a duplex - 1200 sq. feet in both sides - for $8000.I had a young family and there was no way to earn a living around there. Despite the cheap houses, it took a while to sell everything. There were no jobs or services.

I thought about retirees, but a few guys I knew who were retiring from the service told me it was too far from town (Chatham). The hospital, grocery shopping, corner store, etc were too far. That made sense.

I hadn't planned on working at the base once I retired, just happened that way. 2-3 more years and I'll hopefully retire again, final time.

That's what happened with me. I retired, but got a phone call from a company in Ottawa. My old boss gave them my name. I ended up teaching as a civilian for 11 years.

It was a combination of my age and the fact that I was no longer in uniform, but you probably noticed that when you hung up your uniform, you weren't part of the club anyone - despite working for DND. When I walked out the door for the last time, I didn't miss it one bit. I haven't been back to visit, although I do see former work mates from time to time. Oddly, nothing about work is ever brought up.

I don't regret my military service at all. I've just moved on. Most people do. The only ones I feel sorry for are the Commissionaires who live in the past. I go to Timmy's and sit inside occasionally. I overhear these old dogs trying to relive their glory days. The tell the current generation in uniform why things are so much easier today than when they were in the service. laugh Sad.

Lots of great gun shops in the Okanagan, small mom and pop, not the new Costco type with Sitka gear and 5000$ PRECISION rifles. if in Vernon dont miss Del Selin Gunsmith Ltd ( no website, Google for directions), On Vancouver Island John Pullen Gunsmith ( no website), in Kelowna A&C Sports is excellent. Penticton Backcountry Sports is pretty good.

When I was stationed in Comox, we used to go to Granlund Firearms. Does anyone know what's up with them these days? I know they are still open. Apart from mail order, they are pretty much the only game in town for central and north island shooters.

It was smaller then. I was in Comox from 1988 to 1992, so they had just opened. It beat having to drive down island to Nanaimo for supplies. That was just before the Internets appeared to save us from long drives that were sometimes fruitless.

We used to go to Kesselrings in Burlington, WA, for bulk buys. They used to have handgun and rifle cases, and other things in boxes or buckets on the floor. You scooped out cases, put them in a paper bag and checked out by weight. The place was messy, but fun to snoop around in.

Amazon.com is one that I would not recommend, unless you are willing to wait and wait.

I wanted a Hornady 6mm short neck sizing die to play with. I ordered it March 1st from Amazon's Export Dep't. It has not shipped yet. I should know better. I ordered anther die last fll and it took 3 months to get here.
'
'For Hornady stuff, Higginsons can get things quickly. I should have ordered from them.

I had the opprrunity to check out Shooters Choice in Waterloo, ON a few days ago. There seemed to be lots of stock. Prices were typucal for a big city. A bit more than I'm used to, but the taxes there are probably high.

So many good businesses in Canada..

Yesterday, I was looking around for a Timney trigger for my Rem 788. I wanted to find a Cdn shop to keep delivery costs down and (hopefully) get it faster. All my usual haunts were out of stock except for Hirsch Precision - https://www.hirschprecision.com

I used to get a lot of Lapua brass from him. At any rate, he has the trigger I need, and I expect it will be here soon.

I've been to Shooters Choice a few times over the years. Never impressed. Staff always behave like they're doing you a favour serving you. Triggers and Bows used to be good, but now they're the same. I try to spend my money elsewhere. I've been treated decent at Goble's in London, Tillsonburg Gun Shop, Eli's in Simcoe, Ellwood Epps in Orillia when I'm up that way, Gagnon's in Oshawa, hell, even Al Flaherty's in Toronto is better. None of those place have ever made me feel like I was interrupting their day.

Mostly I poke around at gun shows and find what I'm looking for.

I've been treated well at Ellwood Epps in Orillia (although back when Ellwood himself was there, he could be a bit cranky! I thought of it as "Character" with a capital C ... :-)

Al Flaherty's in Toronto was just fine, and had some parts that I could not find elsewhere in Canada.

Goble's Firearms in London, Ont. has treated me very well, and bore the costs of a distributor's error so I could take my favorite rifle on a hunt (they offered a loaner rifle as well).

MacDonald's Sporting Goods in Winnipeg [ MacDonald's in Winnipeg has always been good to deal with. I just checked their webpage to get the correct url, and if any of you fellows back in Canada need a distinctive new rifle, how about a used SHILOH MFG 54-120 PAPER CARTRIDGE PERCUSSION 1863 SHARPS - VG for just $1495 (and those are Canuck bucks too - that is just $US 1120.

ADDED note: Higginson Powders is good too and in addition to reloading powders (and Pyrodex etc.) carries the full line of Hornady bullets, as well as all Lee Precision tools Higginson Powders Their website is fine but they are even better in answering emails.

John (a Swede from Canada --- Björky, björk, eh? :-)

Higginsons is outstanding. I just ordered a Hornady neck sizing die from them. They have to order it from the US, but they tell me it will be about a week for them to get it. They are good with communication and their time estimates have always been right.

WRT Hirsch Precision, the trigger I ordered from them yesterday has shipped. Peter is on the ball there too.

I know that we are all products of our generation. Epps has changed, and not for the good IMO. When George bought it from Ellwood, he had a clientele built in. His son runs things now and I don't expect hat he will go broke, but they suffer from uneven staffing issues and a horrible Internet presence. You'd think, given his age, that Wes would have made the web site better.

I've bought a couple of guns, couple of scopes, some dies and some powder and brass from Prophet River. Never had a hitch. I went into the store once when I was up that way chasing snows, mentioned to Clay that I was waiting for a decap rod, he went and robbed a die for me. Bought two scopes on two orders, online, on the same night. They charged me for two shipments, which was somewhat correct, two different invoices, he tossed 20.00 cash in the next shipment when I mentioned that.

I've bought from X-reload, no issues with them, they had what I wanted, price was actually better than buying out of the US in a couple of cases.

Wolverine in Virden has treated me well, no hesitations recommending them.

Rayn'er Shine Gunworks in Maple Crk Sask has been good , he is a home based business, just call and ask, if it is a reloading component, he likely has it, or will get it ASAP, which is usually pretty quick.

Tradexx has been good, bought bullets, brass and dies from him. Although he did talk himself out of a gun sale, but, at the time I may also have misunderstood what brand he was talking about.

Tried an order with Epps once, never showed, never charged me for it either.

Dragon Bullet Lube was good, got a few things from him, some stuff he didn't stock was PDQ to get. I'd bought some wrong brand gaschecks once, no issues, send them back. I bought the right ones off him in that deal.

Calgary Shooting Centre is one that could definitely benefit from upping their web presence, their selection of guns is pretty decent, lots not on their site, stuff you won't see in many other places in Canada. New Chapuis sxs's, o/u's, combo guns, Merkel sxs's and o/u's, Zoli combos , Kreighoff drillings and SXS's, some really nice used European singleshots, He is a Rigby, Blaser and McNaughton dealer. A lot of high end biathlon, target 22's, sights, etc. Access to RWS stuff and some other European ammo. Next to no reloading stuff though.

Canadian Waterfowl Supplies in Ont, excellent to deal with, Canadian Waterfowler's Pro Shop in Edmonton as well. Spent a good bit of coin in both of them.

I'm glad that we're getting input about gun shops from across the country.

Can anyone from Vancouver Island give us an update on Granlund? I know that we briefly talked about it, but I was wondering how the business is doing the past two or three years.

I was shopping for some brass and checked Wasp Munitions in Sylvan Lake, AB. www.waspmunitions.ca

I bought 500 pces of processed IVI brass from them over the winter for $80, so I went back. They are sold out of that brass, so I ordered 1000 pces of IVI 5.56 once fired brass. It has been cleaned, but I will have to punch out the old primers and ream the pockets. For $114 all in, it's a deal.

Because I am a glutton for punishment, I am about to order another MGM Contender barrel. This time it will have 223 Wylde chamber. I have ordered all my Contender barrels from Nine35.ca. The exchange rate sucks - 1.378400 according to Scotiabank - so it will end up costing close to $700.

Both these Cdn businesses are great.

My whirlwind tour of Southern Ontario gun shops continued yesterday with a stop in a village called Burfurd. It's a small rural community, and the business is called Triggers and Bows. There is a store with a shooting range inside.

You can see some pix of the place here. Triggers and Bows

It's a big place.

I played tourist and chatted briefly with the guy behind the counter. I bought some powder, an MTM ammunition box and a LNL modified case. I went there during the quiet time. No one was there, so I got to snoop around at everything. There must be a lot of archery people around the area. Lots to see.

No. It was Ranting. Do you remember those strange, rants he called posts? He got bounced out of here, but returned as another poster.

In this and other threads, the admin deleted his posts. That is why the threads appear the way they do.
