A spin on the dog thread theme. For me the list is long. A Chessie, a Deutsche Kurzhaar, wire haired Pointer, etc and though I have no real use for one how's this for a handsome bastid? Black and Tan Coonhound

Good looking dog. We had a stray female Black and Tan show up on our doorstep one day. Couldn't find the owner so we ended up keeping her for 10 years or so. Friendly and very laid back. Had to put her down last year.

Go for it.....you don't need a "use" for one because I guarantee you that show dog has never treed a Coon in it's life.
Prett dog though.

I don't want to pee in the chili, but no more purebred dogs for me. But I could love a blue eyed Catahoula.

Very seldom met a dog that i didn't like, including a couple that managed to get a bite on me.
Most wanted are the wirehaired pointing griffon, another chessie, another setter.
And I'd like to raise some, but have no use for the kangal. Might need a to look from a different angle...
Love to have a couple of Bernese mountain dogs for the grandkids... The dogs (and the grandkids) are worth the trouble.
The beagle we've got is a blast with the boys. Goes from cuddly puppy to full on psycho in .3 seconds flat... No dog more fun or more trouble

Never been around one, but I'd like to spend some time with a cane corso.
But it's pretty hard to beat my last two labs.

That is one handsome looking coon hound. He looks big in that picture too. Hunted coons with one as a youngster still miss that dog she thought the sun came up over my shoulders each day. When she say the box going into the back of the truck she'd piss all over. Great dog I would love to own one again but that blood hound sounds great to.
Good luck and shoot straight y'all

That's a tough question. Dogs have come to us through odd circumstances, Lhasa Apso through Brittany. I wouldn't have traded any of them. Actually been pondering the question and not getting anywhere. But the right dog seems to show up when the time is right and I'm wondering what it'll be this time.

The dog threads on the 'fire are great. We just got our Sheltie Lilly a year ago. Our son had a Golden Retriever that was a good dog. What a character.

A couple Greyhounds or Borzois are breeds I would like to own. I was once able to hunt coyotes with greyhounds and it was a blast. A Jack Russell Terrier is another dog I have thought of. I had a terrier mix as a kid which I had a lot of fun hunting rats around the farm. My wife would like an Australian Shepard with which to run Agility. We had a German Shepard when we got married but I wouldn't mind having a Malinoise in the future.

Our current Lab is one of the best all around dogs I've ever had the privilege to own, could definitely see adding a pointing breed in the future though. Maybe Weimaraner or Vizsla....

I love those two Barry. I've had a lot of dogs (mostly bird dogs) and I loved em all dearly but I honestly think the best dog I've had in my adult life is my little Cur dog Sally. Smart, loyal, sleeps on the foot of the bed, trees her own Cats and Coon, and growing up with GSP's she even become about half a bird dog.

Tikkanut I feel for you. All my losses were personal tragedies. But especially the ones I had to put down myself. Could use a clone of every one I ever had. Would be quite the pack. Hope the big guy with the Gold G on HIS hoodie says I can run with all of them when I'm called back. Maybe the best would be an Australian Shepherd in a red merle. Rusty

As a kid, I had a Vizsla that was like a brother more than a dog. Wouldn't mind having another one of those. Also would like to try those Jagtterriers...hell on paws. I'm really enjoying my girlfriend's Catahoula now; I have her for more than half the year, and she's a good, but different, dog.

this guy left an empty spot in my heart....... buried him last week........ So sorry for your loss, tikka. I've always admired Goldens but just never got one and now I'm getting a little long in the tooth, so probably won't. I have had the privilege of having 17 dogs over my lifetime and all have a special place in my memories. BTW . . . Just cuz . . .I've always had a hankerin' for an Irish Wolfhound.

Clumber Spaniel or a Sussex Interesting Steve, I'm thinking of getting a dog this year, for birds and small game. My wife and I are dog afficionados and we've discussed a Clumber, especially now that I'm a gentleman of a certain age (and speed ) We're actually thinking something a bit larger though, as we live in the "country" and my wife thinks we could use a larger dog in the yard in case the coyotes or a cat should get the idea they'd like to have one of our whippets for dinner. (saw a good size bobcat mile or so from the house last night on our way to dinner. ) I'm leaning toward a large, versatile breed. Perhaps an Airedale, or something of that size. I'll consider a Dratharr (spelling? ), or another wirehaired breed. I'm not too partial though, so I'll probably end up with a Lab. And there's nothing wrong with that. As I told my wife when we first got together.............someday I'd like to have 27 dogs.............coupla labs, coupla sighthounds (large and small), some hounds, a few terriers to keep the vermin down, and a lap dog or three. Those catahoulas and the blue Laceys might work too. And being of Italian and Irish descent, perhaps a Lagatto Romagnolo, or Spinonni, and an Irish Water Spaniel. I probably missed a few Geno

Have had many dogs, some I chose and others that chose me.. Lost or Drummer, a Golden Retriever a few months ago. He was 13. Still have Layla a Black Russian terrier. She is the guard dog when I'm not around. A real lover, that thinks she's a lap dog.. Most will not know these, they are the Russian Army's guard dog. She was the runt of the littler, only 95#'s. Our second is another weird one, but a great dog A Neederlandsie Kookier Hundjie.

IF you can find a GOOD Weimaraner (out of one of the HUNTING, rather than show, lines) you will have a GREAT general purpose working dog. = The Gray Ghost was bred to be a VERSATILE "generalist" & do any number of jobs fairly well, though they aren't as good at guard/police work as GSD, won't point birds as well as an English pointer, won't tree as well as a Plott hound and/or retrieve like a Chessie, they can do ALL of those things fairly acceptably.
just my OPINION, tex

I’ve owned two awesome hunting dogs over the years. Blue, a Black Lab was a champion retriever at several puppy trials that my trainer entered him into. I stopped the trials eventually and let him just hunt his ass off on upland birds, pheasants, ducks and geese...Blue would “Mark” ducks from his hidden spot inside my blind. Slight whimper from him told me birds were working the edge of the deeks...High fliers he wouldn’t make any sound knowing they weren’t gonna turn.
Flyer was a small Springer Spaniel that I bought from a guy cheap who had dumped a lot of hunt training into her. He didn’t have the time to hunt her much. He sold her to me feeling bad about the dog not getting to do what he trained it for...Super dog. She didn’t realize she was undersized when she make a long swim retrieves with a goose in her mouth that would almost sink her swimming back to the blind. Both dogs were excellent in temperament and loved to work (hunt) or be treated like royalty at home after helping me fill limits.

I've had mostly hounds, of various breeds, a couple of good pit bulls - and some crossed between the two, Right now we have two Catahoulas - of several in the last few years. They are probably the best all-'round dogs I've ever been around - VERY intelligent, and TOUGH!

I've probably got another 5-7 years with my lab left. By that time I'll be well up into my 70's. I might just settle for a rescue dog. They seem to be grateful, for saving their life.

The dog threads on the 'fire are great. We just got our Sheltie Lilly a year ago.
When someone else mentioned wanting to have a dog back that's already gone on, my first though was how much I agree, and my second thought was how much I would love to see my little Sheltie, Hope, again... One of the best and worst dogs I ever had (she loved me to death and totally hated everybody else)

Oldelkhunter, We have our third Airedale and they are a real pleasure. First was an Oorang strain and next two were a Mountain strain. These are muuch larger than conformation Airedale show dogs and were bred from hunting ‘dales from generations. I don’t hunt them as intended but track w them a long walk them a couple of times daily. They are real intuitive and smart. Also, love children.

I would love to have a german short haired pointer, but my wife and I decided to only adopt shelter dogs. We have 2 really good and spoiled mutts...One is half red healer and some kind of hound (probably some kind of pointer bird hound). The other looks mostly like a Dutch Shepard cattle dog..

Would have loved to keep this dog: Dutch Shepherd Those are some dang good dogs, but very moody and fiercely protective of their owners...We have had ours since she was a pup and have to watch her very closely when strangers are around, even when members of our family visits...Especially, when people are around our kids. We keep her in a cage when people come over that she is not used to being around...

I believe that will be my next choice a few years down the road as well. My wife is pushing for another Bull Mastiff as well. So far since my wife and I have been together Female Golden Retriever Male and Female Rottweiler Wirehaired Dacshund Currently own a male and female Parson Russell terrier and a Male Bull Mastiff. I get hit pretty hard when I lose a dog and I have seldom immediately replaced one so sometimes a few years lapse.

When someone else mentioned wanting to have a dog back that's already gone on, my first though was how much I agree, and my second thought was how much I would love to see my little Sheltie, Hope, again...
I have said, and posted this before, but when Karen Blixen was asked if she could have one thing back in her life she responded that she would like to go on safari with Bror once again. If I were asked to have anything in life back, it would be to hunt big mule deer with Pearl again...the best of times...

They are a lot of work, but great dogs for their immediate family and even great with other pets in the house.....Only drawback is how they react to strangers....Not to mention they are a very intimidating looking breed of dog. Most people that look at ours are just scared of how she looks with the dark colors and muscular body...

And that's true. when I was introduced to that one the Trainer said " theres about a 50/50 chance this one will bite you..." Well, Ive been working with dogs like that for years, and we got along famously...

Currently have a Black Mouth Cur. I'll never go back to a lab after having a Cur dog so my pick is BMC or a Catahoula

Could not be happier with the dog I currently have, blue heeler. Smart, loyal to the point of fault and would follow me into a burning building .

My Grandfather had a Shepard back in the 50's named King. The dog has mythical status in our family, super kind and gentle with kids and women, and even more gentle with pregnant women, but with men he was a phugging brute. Smart as hell was his reputation, and had backpacking neck and shoulders. I would love to have old King back. Story has it I sneaked out of the house when I was 2, next thing the parents heard was screaming down by the pool. They looked out and saw me hanging over the pool, King had me by the ass. Maybe he was going to drop me in and got caught, but I'd like to believe he was looking out for me.

I see the Catahoula mentioned often in this thread. I have one that I love dearly. That said, a Catahoula can be a real handful. They are a very tough, talented dog, that will keep you on your toes. Mine is a real goof ball. Play, play, play is all she wants to do. She plays rough and feels as though she should always come first. She is high maintenance, but we have a LOT of fun.
Here is my list.

Our latest Airedale, Sam, is 13 mos old and 92lbs. His “protective “ trait is really developing. He is crazy about my wife, and fun to watch herd her around while walking him. Once twilight he will sit on porch front legs straight out and rear on deck. He watches. Real absence of barking. Only barks when necessary or just prior to strike. Teeth like a barracuda and jaws like an alligator. But very loving...if that makes sense. And he is a clown!

I wish I could get my "Missy" back from the late 70s early 80s. She was a cross between a very special one of a kind Shelty butch and another very special one of a kind Queensland heeler male. Over the years we got three litters from those two, but none of the pups ever compared to the little sable I picked from the first litter. Cows or pheasant, she did not care. She would work till she dropped with either.
I also have a special place in my heart for a good redbone hound. What a heart they have. But I can not put one to use properly. I intend to spend my retirement years with a nice pair of Golden Retrievers, yet to be aquired.

You wouldn't happen to know of any Airedale breeders that still have hunting lines going, would you? I have a breeder nearby, but there dogs are a number of generations from hunting stock. Thanks, Geno

Exactly like that! I bought Sam from Joe’s Airedales in Oklahoma. There is a breeder in Texas Panhandle. Muleshoe Tx if I remember correctly. Bought our first female from a breeder in McIntosh, NM. She’s real different(breeder not dog). I’ve not heard anything from her in years.
