Cracked the stock on my Kimber Montana 84l. New rifle less then 20 rounds down the barrel. Was shooting it and was going to load another round and noticed it. Crack is on the top/side of the stock by the recoil lug inlet. The mighty kicker that could accomplish such a feat? .270win! What do you think bad stock? I thought these things could take heavy 30-06 recoil?

Going to have to send the whole rifle to Kimber and hope they replace the stock and I’m only out shipping. Should I have it bedded when it comes back? Will that help at all?

Nah, don’t own a lead sled for this exact reason. Also the first factory ammo I’ve shot in years since I’m not setup to load .270 yet.

I had another stock issue with my 6.5 creed a couple years ago and it went fine, just took a month to get it back. If it goes the same this time I’ll be happy.

Good deal!

Are you going to bed the recoil lug recess on the new stock when it arrives?

Yes it is. I have only seen a Mcmillan crack behind the recoil lug recess on a Weatherby Mark V.

As kingston mentioned, that's an unusual place to have one of those stocks crack unless there's a big old footprint on the belly of the stock. Regardless, Kimber will cover shipping both ways so it won't cost you any money, only time. The new Montana stocks have that horrible green color paint on them so you might not get a gray one back, but if you want gray you'd better make sure that the CS rep enters that information in your file in capital letters.

I had the front pillar on a Kimber Montana pull loose, and Kimber replaced the stock just fine. I would expect them to do the same in this situation, too. And, my grey stock was replaced with a puke green stock, but I was just happy I got a new stock.

I'd say the crack is an indicator of where the recoil on the lug is significant. Anything can happen and I'm not surprised where it occurred. Fortunate to have it crack now rather than in early fall.
I should add:
At least ten years ago, I had a new Montana 300WSM go from a near MOA shooter to well over 2 inches at the second range session. Upon inspection, I discovered the lug split in two and it was something they handled quick enough.
