340 wby, 250 grain hornady I've yet to need a second shot,
with that rifle, average range on at least 16 elk, all under 200 yards most under 100 yards, (lost exact count )
most staggered or fell,a few ran a short distance

35 whelen 250 speer , two elk, both well under 100 yards one mule deer

30/06 Springfield, 190 hornady, two elk and several mule deer, a single shot each, none over 150- 170 yards

300 wby, 200 speer, several mule deer at about 120-160 yards, never required more than one shot
bullet opens rapidly devastating on chest/lung heart shots

270 win, 150 grain speer , several mule deer , can,t remember needing a second shot

45/70 405 grain gas check, hard cast , two elk, one at about 220 yards, one at about 45 yards

its not that I'M an exceptional shot, I just don,t pull a trigger unless I'm almost 100% dead certain of the shot
and most were taken with a sling and bi-pod while sitting or leaning over a branch on a tree.

.277-150 gr-Nosler Partition-270 Winchester-Various ranges from 30 -260 yards
.277-140 gr-Swift A Frame-270 Winchester-Various ranges from 70-413 yards
.277-130 gr Barnes TTSX-270 Winchester-140 yards
.308-180 gr Nosler Partition-300 Winchester Magnum-Various ranges from 25 -240 yards
.308-180 gr Barnes TTSX-300 Winchester Magnum- Various ranges from 60-320 yards
Only one required an additional shot and it was from the 300 Win Mag using a NP. It wasn't the fault of the bullet as my first shot missed the mark.

The first 21 elk were killed with a .300 WM, mostly with 165 gr. Sierra HPBT.. One was taken with a 200 gr. Speer.. In those days I didnt noted the bullet used in my notes.. I am sure it is in old diaries ..
.300 WM 180 gr. Horn. It broke in to fragments.. Somewhere I have this bullet.. This was a 5 pt. bull.
.300 WM 180 gr. N. Part. killed 5 elk..
,338 Win. Mag.. 250 gr. N. Part.. This was a cow.. The range was long, it required a good hold over for the kill.. Back to the .300
.300 WM 200 gr. N. Part cow no mention of the range.
.300WM 165 gr. Sierra HPBT two cows
7mm Wea. Mag. 160 Sierra HPBT one cow..
.300WM back to the 165 Sierra
.300 WM 3x3 bull at about 400 yards 150 N. BTBT
.300WM 165 Sierra cow
7mm RM 140 gr. N. BTBT cow
.300WM 150 gr. N. BTBT two cows
.340 Wea. Mag. 200 gr. Accubond cow at 300 yards
.340 5x5 210 N. Part. 150 yards
.300 Wea. cow with 200 gr. Accubond

.300 WM 165 Sierra two cows one at 225
.300 WM 200 gr. Part cow at 250 y.

I have used Nosler Partitions (Yesterday's Bullet Today) for many years in many rifles with great success. Since they came out I have added Barnes Triple Shocks as an additional favorite in my rifles for elk especially. I have also used Nosler Accubonds, Hornaday Interlocks, Winchester Power Points, Remington Core- Lokts, and Trophy Bonded Bear Claws to some degree. Nothing fancy.

Wow that will be a challenge. Off the top of my head I can remember these which I have used myself.

270s....270 Winchesters and 270 Short mag. 150 and 160 grain Nosler Partitions. 150grain Remington Core Lokts (old round nose types)

7MMs..... 7X57. 7MM Rem Mag. 7MM Weatherby Mag. 160 and 175 grain Nosler Partitions. 175 Gr Hornady RN

30s....... 300 Savage. 308 Winchester. 30-06. 300 H&H. 300 Win Mag. 308 Norma Mag. 300 Weatherby Mag. 150 grain Winchester Power Points. 165 grain Hornady Inner Lock. 180 grain Remington Core-Lokt. 200 Grain Nosler partitions. 220 grain Hornady and Sierras

8X57 ....200 grain Nosler Partitions. 170 Grain Hornady SSTs

338s...... 338-06. 338 Win Mag. 210 Grain Nosler Partitions. 225 Grain Hornady Inner locks. Barnes X 225 grain. Hornady 250 grain Round Nose. 275 Grain Speer

348 Winchester...... 200 grain Hornady flat point

9.3MMs ... 9.3X62. 9.3X74R 286 Grain Hornady Inner Lock. 286 Grain Nosler partition. 225 grain RWS

375H&H 235 Grain Speer. 270 grain Hornady Round Nose. 270 grain Winchester Power points. 285 Grain Speer Grand Slam. 300 grain Hornady Round Nose. 300 grain Hornady solid. 300 grain Nosler Partition.

416 Taylor 400 grain Hornady Innerlock

458s 45-70. 458 Winchester. 460 G&A. 400 grain Speer. 405 grain Cast. 500 grain Cast.

Muzzleloader.
58 Cal Lee REAL (can't remember the weight, but the heavy one)
62 caliber round ball.

Handguns
44 Mags .....265 grain Hornady. 250 grain SWC Keith. 320 grain G.C. LBT
454 Casull 370 grain LBT G.C.

Arrow. Compressed ceder shaft, 4 feather fletch, 190 grain Grizzly Broadhead.

I probably have missed a few here, but this is most of them.

Other bullets and shells I have seen kill elk in the hands of friends and clients
are probably at least 6-7 times as large as the list above.
Again off the top of my head we have:
243 with 100 grain factory loads and 100 grain Nosler partitions.

257 Roberts, 25-06 and 257 Weatherby mag. 117 Factory loads, 115 Barnes, 120 grain Nosler Partitions. 120 grain Sierra

6.5 Grendel. 6.5X55 Swede. 6.5 Creedmoor. 6.5-06 264 Win Mag. 125 grain Nosler Partitions. 140 grain Nosler Partitions. 140 grain Hornady flat base, 130 grain Berger. 140 grain Berger, 156 grain Norma, 160 grain Hornady RN.

270 Weatherby Factory 130 grain load. 150 grain Nosler partitions

Many 270 bullets of 130 140 and 150 grains fired from 270 Winchesters. Must be at least 20 that could be added here.

7-08. 280 Rem. 7MM Mag. 7MM STW I don't know if I can count the bullets I have seen used from these shells. The ones that seem to be the best have been the Nosler Partitions and the Barnes X, but I have seen elk killed with so many from the 129 grain Hornady to the 180 grain Barnes Originals, and probably 20 other weights and brands with results from "great" to "very poor".

30-30 170 grain factory.

30-40 Krag with 190 grain Gas Checked LBT Cast Bullets.

7.5 Swiss with Norma factory loads

LOTS of 30-06s and about every 30 cal magnum I ever read about, and probably about 6 wildcats that are not listed even in "Cartridges of the World". The 30 cal bullets I have seen used are as numerous as the 7MM. Maybe even more.

7.65 Argentine with handloaded 180 grain Hornady bullets. (I loaded them for that friend)

8X57 with Norma factory loads.

325 Win Short Mag Factory loads

340 Weatherby mags with handloaded 250s and also factory 250s

338 Lapua with 250 grain Sierras and with 300 grain Bergers

357 magnum lever action marlin with 187 grain LBT bullets

358 Norma. (don't know what bullet)

350 Rigby with old Knoych loads. 300 grain

9X57 Norma Factory load

9.3X57 with Nosler 250 grain and also with Norma 323 Oryx

9.3X74R Hornday 286 grains Nosler 286 Grains. RWS 225 grains

38/55 Winchester with 240 grain LBT cast bullets.

375 Weatherby with 270 grain Hornadys.

378 Weatherby with both 275 Hornadys and 300 grain Noslers.

405 Winchester with Hornady factory loads.

416 Rigby with 350 grain Barnes and 400 grain Hornadys

44-77 Sharps with hand cast bullets.

45-70 with 350 grain Hornady RNs

577/450 Enfield with 550 grain hand cast bullets.

50 cal muzzleloaders balls and bullets both.
54 cal muzzleloaders balls and bullets both.
58 cal muzzleloaders Balls.

50 BMG with 647 grain and 750 grain Barnes.

45 Colt handguns with heavy cast bullet in both Keith and LBT styles

And I probably forgot a few from this list too.

I wish had some of you guys "trouble remembering" just how many elk you killed, much less what bullet! ha Well, I bet I've killed more swamp rabbits, grey & fox squirrels than all of you together! ha The First Half of my Life in East Texas was/is awful sparse for elk. Life is funny, and very exciting! Life sorta "made it up to me" as I had the opportunity later on to shoot 22 head of Plains Game in South Africa/Namibia on four different trips. smile

What some are remembering is a Walter Mitty existence. Some poster said he killed 74 elk? HA! That’s your story and you can tell it however you like...

Holy [bleep] - some of you guys have killed more elk than I have deer - and with a four and a half month season, it isn't particularly difficult to kill deer in my state

.308" 168gr. TTSX
.308" 180gr. Hornady SP
