This was first published in 1956 in Russia. It has been republished there and is available now in English in a very readable translation from Frontline Books available at Abebooks. There is a version available at "used" for about $10 shipped that has Zaitsev's name misspelled on the cover. (That's not noted in the description).

This was written during the cold war and certainly has some characteristics of the propaganda of that time but it is really a fascinating read. The methods and craft are described but not in a technical or dry way just more of a conversational way. Zaitsev's duel with the German Major Konings who had been the head of the sniper school near Berlin is described. The hardships of the Battle of Stalingrad are not stressed, just stated factually or as 'that's just the way it was'.

When I mentioned the propaganda aspect it's related to how the German prisoners were treated kindly and the Russians who were captured were tortured to death. That's like a German soldier's book of how the Russian POW's were treated well and the Germans who were captured by the Russians were tortured to death.

Well worth a read if you have any interest in this aspect of warfare.
