I traded into this one with a couple of boxes of ammo thrown in, expecting that further ammo would be tough to find. I already have a 17HMR and a 22 magnum, but I like exotics and it fit right in.

Sometimes it’s better to be lucky! Aguila has produced a new run of 5mm and I scarfed up 500 rds. I am a happy camper!

If you find that the Aguila ammo shoots in your 591, you might want to buy a lifetime supply while you can get it.

+1 I'd be buying a case of 5,000

The first run Centurion stuff shots well in my 592. Never shot my 591 much. Haven't grabbed any of the new stuff yet.

The Centurion didn't shoot worth a damn in my 592, but I'm an optimist and hope that the new stuff will shoot.

Which did you try ?? One.or both ??

The hollow point stuff (not varmint) is what my 592 likes.......a lot.

I bought a 591 for my woodchuck rifle in 1979. It shot fabulous with the Remington 38 gr. HPPL ammo. Killed a truckload of chucks, some rabbits and squirrels and a couple of deer with it. Sold it along about 1983 or 84 when I ran out of ammo for it. I'll never forgive Remington for discontinuing the ammo so soon.

Both. The SP was better than the HP, but neither was as good as the original 38 grain HPPL.

Or it's customers who bought the 5mm rifles. Hell they obviously didn't care in the early 80's when they left their customers who bought their rifles in the 70's with no ammo. I despise Remington to this day for that.

Just back from a LGS. He has a nice 592 with (3) boxes of the old Remington ammo included. Asking $425 but I suspect I can get it a little less. He also has (6) boxes of the new Aquila ammo in stock at $24.95 each. I'm considering trying to make a deal for all of it.

$425 is a steal for the rifle ALONE in the current market if it's even decent. Make your best pitch to the guy...……...but go with enough cash in your pocket to pay face price.

Came close to jumping on that wagon when the 5mm was introduced but other things got in the way. Remington's support of its customers for that cartridge left much to be desired.

I waited til JUUUUUUST before the general public became aware of Centurion's initial ammo release to jump on the 5mm bandwagon. Scooped a 591M (98%+) and a 592M at the same auction for a song...……..along with 2 1/2 boxes of original ammo. Sold the ammo and knocked 1/3 off the price of the guns. Then stocked up on the Centurion ammo when it hit the street. VERY glad I got in !!! The 5mm RRM is NOT what most folks picture when you say "rimfire". There's a whole lotta potential in the round.

Remington has abandoned more than one of their red-headed stepchildren.

I bought a 591 & 592 also.
The 592 loves Centurion.....
The 591 was picky...I sold it.

I thought 15 bucks was high for Centurion.....
Guess I haven't bought any in a while.

I am a Remington fan generally but on this your 110% right and it's not the only time the asswipe management types at Remington have done this. One can only conclude the Remington Management f**ks aren't shooters but beancounters.

Just left over there picking up something else. He said I could get it for $400 OTD with the (3) boxes of old Remington ammo. His dad, who works at the shop too, is the original owner. Ohhhh so tempting.

Well, maybe as an investment or a collectable, but I can think of better ways to spend $425 for something to actually use. Hummers and good .22 mag loads will do the same jobs and offer wide choices in guns and ammo. I've had a 581 since 1967, and its a pretty good little rifle, but I ain't looking for more, regardless of caliber (or cartridge)

I bought the magazine type 5mm Remington magnum years ago before Aguila was making the ammo. complete rifle with one magazine was $125. There was a guy in California that was making a centerfire conversion for the rifle plus me sold the centerfire brass. The bullets at the time were a problem since 20 caliber/5mm bullets seemed to all be made with plastic tips and were too long for the mags. Another fellow was selling bullets that I believe were a match for the original 5mm magnum bullets and fit the magazine perfect. After buying all that conversion stuff with the brass and the bullets I discovered Aguila was starting to make the original rimfire stuff so I put the conversion away just in case the Aguila project didn't last and bought their ammo. It's a nice light rifle and has a good amount of power for a little rimfire.

Good friends brother lost an eye shooting his Rem 5mm Mag. Don’t remember if it was clip or tube version. From what I recall the plate that’s screwed onto the side blew off and this or parts/shrapnel hit him in the face. He wears glasses and had them on. Don’t know if they were safety or not. Anyway his eye was black for awhile and there was hope his vision would return. Never did. Looking into it years ago I remember finding a sight specific to the Rem 5mm Mag. Guy on there posted a letter from Rem about potential problem with these rifles. I’ll look for it. Anyway, certainly a lesson for me to wear eye protection always when shooting.

Reference here but letter link no longer works:

I bought a mystery box, at an estate auction. It contained 3 boxes of original Remington, late 60s vintage and 2 boxes of Peter's, early 60s vintage. 1 box was missing 12 rounds.

After searching for almost 2 years, for a decent rifle, I listed the ammo and sold it.

Awesome cartridge, far superior to the .17 rimfires. IMHO

I bought 10 boxes of 5mm RM and because MIDWAY USA only sells rimfire ammo in individual boxes, disassembling the 10 box cartons, I got ammo from 3 different lots; 5, 4, and 1. I bought 20 boxes of 17HM2 at the same time and got ammo from 2 different lots 18 and 2. It seems like a lot of unnecessary work to disassemble the cartons, but there must be a reason for them doing it.
