So were they the heavy jacket ones from Elmers day or are they the newer ones with the .026" jackets? MB

Solids or softs? The tungsten solids were really great solids.

If I wanted to use a 275 grain bullet,it would be a Swift A-Frame.

Exactly--if I wanted to.

Don't see any reason to use anything heavier than around 225 grains in the .338 Winchester these days. (The .338 Lapua is another story.)

Have both kinds of 275 Speers in my collection, the early heavy-jacket and later not-so-heavy. Have been meaning for years to shoot both side-by-side into test media, but somehow testing bullets that are almost unobtainium never makes it to the head of the to-do list--especially when available (and better) bullets work so well.

Interesting...
I got some a couple boxes of 275 speer 338
225 gr. Grand slams,
Nosler 210 Partition
and 225 Hornady Spire pts.
I would trade for something of value....
and brass

Got a bunch of reloading stuff from a widow's sale and I don't own a .338

The 275’s shot clover leafs out of my old model 70....
Never did shoot anything with them though and the recoil was right up there!
I finally settled on the Hornady 225 for all my.338 needs.

Its very intro as I said before the 338 was made to shoot a 250ger as its meat and potato , then we would go up to a 275, and down to a 225. But the shooting world has DEMASCULATED the 338 as to shoot 185gers!! MMM

A well loaded early pre-64 M-70 Super Grade 300 H&H will do most anything with 180-200 gr Nosler P. I have used 275 gr Speers in another Model 70-traded those 275s off for some Nosler 250 gr
Swift A-Frames and Woodleighs are also the answer.

For killing big moose in AK, try a 348 Ackley with 270 Hawk bullets -kills them and flattens them within 6 feet. Using iron sights Lyman 48 on a Winchester Model 71. Get to creep up on em.
Just like grizzlies.

My pre'64 M/70 .338 shot the Speer 275gr. bullet into little cloverleaf groups. I shot a mulie buck behind the ear at 60yds. with one of those bullets, result was an instantaneous lobotomy and DRT.

I’ve never shot any game with my 338’s except 250 grain Nosler Partitions. I noticed this last week that I had some loads from the 80’s and my brother had some loads from the 90’s all 250 grain Partitions. They were loaded with 3100 - sorta like old H4831, I think.
We pulled all the bullets from those loads and threw the powder away. I have a new box of 250 Partition bullets. Comparing the three vintages, they are different. I see in another thread MD mentioned Nosler improving their bullets as time passes.

I don’t mind the kick that much with 250’s, but what the hey. My brother and I are going moose hunting this fall, ya hoo! A first for both of us.He doesn’t like the kick he gets out of his Browning 338 with the 250’s. So... since I’m taking my 338 Win Model 70 Classic as a back up rifle. (This is my third 338 I’ve owned.) It didn’t group the 250’s as well as the other two 338’s I’ve owned. But I have only shot the rifle a few times. Per recommendations from a writer I respect, We are going to try 210 grain Nosler Partitions, if we can get the two rifles to shoot them well. Brother had tried getting a mono lighter bullet to shoot and hasn’t had much luck with accuracy: 4”+ @100 yards.
There’s still six foot snow drifts in my shooting range so testing will wait for me.
As far as 275 grain Speer bullets, I have not had any issues with Speer hot core flat base bullets. I’d bet that for a cup and core bullet they’d be one of the better ones.

Just a suggestion, instead of arguing about who has the shiniest penny, why not stack dry paper and test the bullets???

I admit it’s tough for me to use anything but 250 grain Partitions, especially on perhaps the only moose hunt I’ll be on. It’s tough to change, especially if what you’ve been using works very well.

I prefer classic.

I've got a couple of boxes of each................

Tried the Barnes-X bullet, rifle couldn't keep them on a 9" pie plate....

But these 'originals'............ it's like they're laser guided!
