I had never hunted with bow, crossbow etc. I picked up a used Barnett Recruit for a starter crossbow. It needs a new string. Is that something I can do or should I take it to shop and have it replaced?

Thanks for any help offered.

Take it to an archery Pro shop - they have the right tools to safely change out the string/cables - this is not a task that you want to experience an "oops" with...

FWIW - I had a Barnett Wildcat, my string/cables would not last more than 100-150 bolts before separating enough to need replacement - YMMV.

A bow shop would be your best bet imo. This the very reason I decided to go with an Excalibur crossbow. I can restring it in the woods in just a few minutes and not have to worry about the sights being off. Plus you can decock it by hand.
