I've never found anything heavier than 100wt fleece to breathe well enough for me, unless I am sitting dead still in very cold conditions. Guess that's why I prefer the R1 hoody to heavier stuff.

Sorry for the misunderstanding. I rarely come across anyone wearing an R1 (or any 100wt fleece) as a base layer. Typically used more as a mid layer with a lightweight base layer underneath.

I’d consider wearing an R1 as a base layer in really (really) cold weather, otherwise agree its most often used as a mid layer
