I have a Savage F-TR .308 In fact it shoots the Lapua 4PL7073 / Varget hand loads as well as dozens of people said it would shoot.
That said, I ran across a thread where the topic was best .308 bullet. The Scenar was well supported as a great deer bullet
So, If the object is head shooting at 800 yards that seems to add up. I admit to have shooting two deer at close range in the head. My Alaska years were spent with most people head shooting not just the deer but moose as well.

I never liked the ethics or just the way a head shot deer looks. To me it is disrespectful. On the other hand I will not take a body shot on a squirrel.

So is the Scenar a deer bullet because it will expand? What is the lowest velocity that expansion is most likely?

Yep, Pat's portfolio of deceased critters clears any doubts about Scenars being good game bullets.

Just don't go too light, too fast. A 90 gr. Scenar at warp speed out of a .240 can make a mess at the skinning shed. And, that's not hearsay... blush

Once was enough.

But heavier bullets at sane velocities work well. I've read that the Scenar is sorta like the Hunting VLD, just doesn't break up quite as bad and into bigger pieces. I've observed more exits with Scenars, than VLD's. That's my current understanding: it's my story and I'm sticking to it.... smile

I like both, but I think you gotta match bullet design with velocity for optimal results.

That was not the tread...this is much better! Great read. I have taken 20 plus deer with 150TSX bullets but 400 yards is as far as I can trust them to expand. The Scenar may add another 200 yards. Kansas Winter wheat fields.

155’s at 3200fps from my 300 wsm have killed a lot of animals and 1 per customer. It’s about the only bullet I even shoot in it anymore.

From what I hear the Scenar is pretty hard and tends to rifle right through game without opening up much if any at all. Perhaps some one who has actually used them on game will chime in. I admit it would be kinda cool if they worked ok on game.

You are new here, so go look up the scenar thread about all the game killed with em. It will show a lot of really good hunters, and the game killed with it. I have shot wolves, big mule deer, and elk with the 155 scenar, and they are they are very effective in game.

I'm not impressed with their game performance. Do they kill ? Yes. Do they expand violently on contact and then penetrate well ? No, and yes. So, if you need a very accurate bullet for long ranges, and you can place your shots well, I'm sure they are fine. But if you shoot running animals as I have to do, you are better off with a fast opening bullet that will hold together and penetrate. Nobody I've seen or talked to can place running shots as they should be 100% of the time. E

No deer, but one 120lb pig at around 100 yards, bullet left 16" 7.62 REPR at 2650 fps, the exit hole in the pig ribs would make a nice 20 ounce pop bottle coozie.

Some folks ACTUALLY shoot...others talk about it.

It ain't ever been tough to cypher, who do and who don't.

Not deer, but I dropped this cow at 615 yards this last December with my 20" barreled Tikka T3 using a 155 Scenar.

Single shot through the front shoulder.

My daughter Scenar'ed this cow at 375 yards with her 20" .308:

A single shot right behind the shoulder.

To make a long story short, they shoot small groups at extended ranges and kill things dead, in my experience.

I’ve shot 155s through everything from mule deer to grizzly bears and they always worked. Love that bullet.

Has anyone run the "L" version versus the regular?

BCs are listed as different:
regular = .508
L version = .460

Well I started this re-cap so as of late I thought I would pass on a notion. Looking for an every day range/deer bullet I substituted 150 H SSTs as they cost a good bit less than 155 Scenars (that took about a $10 a box increase since last Fall )(?)
The gun is a FTR 308 30" so the groups are most always excellent. The combination best at 600 yards WAS 155 Scenar/ Varget. Wanting a higher BC I fell back on N190Accubond LR (a favorite in Krag s and about every '06 tried).
190s were not found well suited to the 1-12 twist. Or I was not willing to overload them to see if they might improve group size.
Some H 165SST s were tried for no good reason at 600 yards. 5 shot group was 2.49"...adding five more opened things up to 2.95" Benchmark was the powder in the Fed case 210M 165 SST combination.
'Took 14.5 MOA from a 100 yard zero. and the 100 yard zero is about 3 clicks Left to have a 600 yard zero.
I have been shooting handloads for forty years and it is still new to me.

Only sent a few through one cow elk. They work except for the neck shot which had a pencil in and out through tissue (no bone hit). First shot was hard quartering and ripped a 2 foot hole in opposite side with guts hanging everywhere.

Exact same for me. 300 WSM runs them at 3285 fps & I see no reason to use anything else. I could not be happier.

This guy was smoked with a 139 scenar from my 260 at about 100 yards. It totally destroyed his heart, turning it into mush and making the blood the brightest red I have ever seen. I think they work fine. However, he did run about 30 yards and every animal that I have shot with a amax bullet dropped in its tracks.

Being able to place your shot in the kill zone is more important in my opinion so if you have good dope then use the 155's.
