Classic caliber in a classic rifle.

I just found a No.1 RSI in 7x57 for sale and I'm having it shipped to me next week. I've been looking for one for a long time.

I've had one for 15 years. I tried a few different scopes but settled on a Leupold 6x36. I was loading the 140gn Nosler Partition with H4350 but finally ran out of them so am currently trying 140gn Woodleigh PPs. My rifle has never been a tack driver but it will put three shots into an inch and a half which is perfectly fine as I tend to stalk in close. I have never measured the twist but I'd assume 1:9 or there abouts. Mine has no problems stabilising bullets from 140 to 160gn.

I think the classic old 7x57 is the ultimate chambering in the Number 1A. If I were you I'd grab that rifle up ASAP before somebody else does.

Mine shoots 150 gr old Nosler Solid Base bullets real well. Shoots 120 BTs pretty good also.
I relieved the fore end wood from touching the action, opened up the fore end tip and added some bedding
and put a hard plastic shim between the hanger and the barrel.
That improved the accuracy and it now holds point of impact year round.

My experience mirrors Elvis', I shot mostly 160's and 154's in my first one, also some 120's. All went into 1" - 1.5", the rifle was made in this century, twist was "fast enough" and the throat was short enough I could touch the lands with a 160 Deep Curl if I wanted. The older ones had a reputation for having very deep throats.

My preferred powder for heavies was H4831SC, I think it was RL15 with the 120's, would have to check to be sure. You can use 7mm-08 loading data if you wish, the No.1 is a very strong action. Winchester brass is reputed to have more volume than other brands, I don't know if that is universally true, but the lot I have does indeed have room for more powder than the others I have on hand.

If you reverse the rear sight so it folds to the rear, you can mount a 6x36 in low rings and it will probably be far enough back that you won't need an offset ring. 1 3/4 - 5 Leupold would be another good choice.

That first one was stolen a couple of years ago , there's another in the safe now, I just haven't started with it yet.

This is one case where a newer one will likely be better than the old Red Pad models. I had one in the early 80s that wouldn't put three shots in a real group, factory or my handloads crafted with a Lee Target Loader. Two shots would usually be close together, but not always the first two. I even tried it with the forend off altogether with no luck. If I had known at the time to check for rib clearance at the receiver end, I might have solved the problem, or maybe not. I really wanted that thing to shoot, and sold a nice sporterized 98 by Flaig's to buy it.

JB has written that Ruger throats are shorter now. I seated bullets for mine way out there to get close to the lands, and it helped not one whit.

Mine is an older red pad model with the long throat I picked up used. I mostly shoot 160 Partitions seated way out - I can touch rifling with the bullet base barely in the case but don't seat them out that far. It shoots well enough - usually grouping two close and stringing a third vertically. Forend bedding would likely dial it in but haven't diddled with it yet.

Well guys I was a day late a dollar short on the #1A 7x57. But not all was lost I was able to snag a Ruger MK II .270win International.. From 1993 never been fired.. Now I'm just hoping I can get it to shoot! It's beautiful. I love it.

Wish it would of been a .308 or a 7x57 but it is what it is.

I had a red pad 1A in 7X57, the throating was very looong. I believe due to this, the best I could get out of it was a consistent 1 1/2 inches (150 grain Nosler BT's).

Should have been happy with that, but you know it did not meet some arbitrary standard, So down the road it went... never mind that it was consistent, recoil was pleasant and it would have done everything needed of it except varminting.

I have a red pad #1A 7x57. The throat was so far out of spec that I had my gunsmith do a chamber cast. An almost 2" throat. WTF? I sent the gun back to Ruger and after a long 7 month wait it came back with a terse note that the rifle was accurate. The old barrel had a scratch on it that was not there so I suspect Ruger just rebarreled the rifle. These days it will shoot from .75" to 1.25" depending what bullet I'm shooting in the gun and how well I'm shooting. I have a small collection of Ruger #1 rifles in various configurations from .22 Hornet to .416 Rigby. That #1A in 7x57 is probably tied with a #1B .300 Win. Mag. and a #1S also in .300 Win. Mag. as my all time favorites in the #1. I know Ruger made a few but I would seriously love to find an affordable #1S in 7x57.

My 7x57 shoots ok. Not a tack driver but a passable deer rifle. I have a NIB no. 1 in 275 Rigby but I have never shot it.

That has to be a felony, someplace.

I had one of the older models that 1-1.5" group was not good enough for me! Never could touch the lands with any bullet! Traded it for a Mark X in 7x57 Mannlicher made in Manchester England, custom stock shoot 3 shot group can cover with a dime @ 100 meters! Likes the 139-140 grain bullets from any maker!

some Ruger # 1`s shoot great right out of the box,some need forearm work like bedding or floating maybe both ? hand loading ammo can help too ? i bet that 7x57 could shoot better with a little work,but sometimes people are the problem too. when you wanna see how well a rifle shoots for a small group you do need good rests,a decent bench,good scope with maybe at least higher power ability if your older like me to see better. many times i have to shoot customer`s rifle to prove how well a rifle shoots and do i hate bigger magnums then. i try and coach them so i don`t always have to get beat up with recoil.learning to shoot well takes time and competing against other people can make you a better shot ,which can help you hunting.
