Besides the 1895 Winchester lever action and a few double barreled rifles, the original 1885 Winchester was chambered in .405. Modern versions include the remake of the 1885 by Miroku for Winchester, a Uberti made 1885, Ruger #1s in blue and stainless and the TC Encore...

Was just wondering if anyone has one and what they are using for loads....

I have 2 stainless laminates and 1 blue/walnut in Ruger No. 1's. I'm afraid none have been fired yet, but soon I hope.

In my model 95's, both original and new, plus my #1, I run 300 Hornadys with 54 grains 3031, .........it's accurate and puts stuff down!

I have a Shiloh Sporter No. 1 in .40-70 Sharps Straight, I make brass from .405 Win. Does that count? Shoot mostly 410 grain cast bullet with a case full of FFg.

Bob, I have a wood and blue Ruger No1 in 405 Win. My favorite load uses 55 grains of Varget with either Hornady 300 grain fp or sp.

No 1 in .405 here also; i've shot mostly the Hornady 300gr SP bullet......mine shot quite well with the Barnes, still have a box or 2 of those around here, but the Hornadys were much cheaper & they didnt seem to bounce off the local deer.

was shooting 57gr Reloder15 in mine with the Hornadys.

I've had an 1885 Browning reproduction for some years, shot it just last week. I use a 320 grain cast bullet.

Rio7 has a No. 1 L/SS chambered in .405 Winchester with a Skinner peep sight. I shot his a couple of times and enjoyed it.

I would bet that he has used his in the field and on more critters than just about anyone else on this site. Perhaps he will chime in...

I had a stainless Ruger but sold it. Still have one of the Winchester 1885 Sporters with the 24" barrel and nice soft buttpad instead of the steel one. Put a Williams receiver sight on it... Also picked up a TC Encore barrel in a trade from firearms44. Had it cut to 20" to match the 500 S&W and .50 Cal. BP barrels I have...have not even shot that one yet.

Planning on mainly using cast bullets in the .405. Have several molds from the original Lyman 288 grain to a 350 grain RCBS.... Was hoping to hunt with the TC last year but time ran out for making up a good load so just hunted with a .358 again.... Accurate Molds has several great designs but just can't justify another mold right now...

Had an old capegun a few years back, .405/16 ga. Fun gun and easy to load up. The regulation load was stout.

I've used the two cast bullet moulds you mentioned and both shot well, but the bullets cast from the RCBS mould were far heavier than what I though they should have been. With wheelweight alloy, I think they were about 380 grains. Perhaps I had an oddball mould. My favorite bullet, cast from an Accurate mould (don't recall the catalog number, but I had a small part in designing it), is a 320 grain gas check design. I only shoot it at a muzzle velocity of a little over 1500 fps. Recoil is tolerable, something that can't said for the heavy loads.

I have a No.1 SS/laminate in 405 Win but did not know they could actually be fired with live ammo. ......... just kidding but,.... it is getting harder to get my toys to the range these days!

Just saw a post over on the 1911 Forums that someone was looking for .405 brass.... Had no clue that Hornady had stopped producing both brass and ammo....

Hope one day they will see fit to make an occasional run to take care of all their customers....

Yeah Bob, I heard quite a while back they had quit making the brass, so when I ran into a fella selling 2 unopened 50 count boxes of Hornady brass, I scooped it up. They are still making the bullets though I think.

Guess there just wasn't the demand....

Going to be kinda hard to sell all those rifles out there for sale if there is no ammo available...

The .405 #1 tropic with 300 gr. Hornady, or 320 gr. cast and 3031, it will shoot a clover leaf at 100 yards, a fun rifle to hunt just about anything with. I have never had to shoot anything more than once with mine. I think you can still get loaded ammo from Buffalo Bore, and brass from Starline, I have a life time supply of ammo and brass for my .405. FYI here... Hornady has no intentions of a 405 brass run anytime soon as Jorge and I found out last year direct from the top horse's mouth....Fortunately both of us bought a good inventory before they disappeared from the shelves however I highly suggest you pounce on any you find even at present inflated prices..

i have been lookin for a nice Ruger #1 in a 405, anyone have one of these for sale ?
