Surprising the ignorance of some hunters.

I think that might be just a bit of a generalization. Lot's of bears get shot in the alpine in both the spring and fall. Big chunk of the state isn't on the coast, though you probably know that and the comment was likely directed.

Alaskans don't actually hunt bears; its more of a spiritual melding of nature and life forces. Most people don't understand the mystical energy, wisdom, and guidance gained from the endeavor.

Bears invite you to embrace their power.

Or maybe not ignorance, but maybe the local.... they were treated like vermin for years here, I won’t waste the bandwidth on what “Alaskans” I’ve met met in person do to brownies or blackies up there..... hint...

They're an over grown raccoon. Raccoons are fun to hunt too.

Thought I would chime in here. Grizzly bears routinely kill Black bears, and not just for food. If you see a bear around here it is a Grizzly these days.
The Grizzly hunt has been stopped here and our ungulate population has taken a severe dive. There are very few , moose and elk these days and this is due to predatory bears.
A spring Grizzly hunt was purely a trophy hunt, extremely tough, very challenging and memorable. Not for the unfit and you better take your bearpaw snowshoes, you will need them . Hunting over bait is illegal here and I agree.
I don't understand why hunting over bait or inside a high fence is allowed. It is not a fair chase hunt , imo.

Imagine that Oregon and British Columbia bears act different than they do in the Midwest and other areas where baiting is popular.

We wouldn’t be able to control populations without bait. Even the hound guys use bait here.

Arrogance based off ignorance is retarded every time.

The neighbor kids wait in front of my house for the school bus. Often in the dark. We don't tolerate bears in the neighborhood!

The same applies to dog packs!

Moose and caribou are an important food source in Alaska and 50% of the calves don't make 30 days.

oremi,

Remember you are watching guided hunts on TV. None of that is remotely like doing it yourself on public land. If you would like an education on bear hunting and baiting you are welcome to come with me. It involves a 60 mile drive, then a 2 mile hike with a 55 gallon barrel on your back. After 1.5 miles you make a hard turn and climb 1000' vertical. This is to get away from other hunters doing the same thing or hunting with hounds. Once you get your barrel located, then you need to make another trip to get a tree stand setup. Now you will need to make at least weekly trips with 40-50# of food (I use cheap dog food and scraps). Now as you will see on your trail camera there are bears hitting your bait but...........they are coming in at night. Every once in a while one will show up during hunting hours so you keep trying. So goes bear hunting - not nearly as easy as it sounds. Unless you pay someone to do the work for you - and what would be the fun in that?
