Yep, I have yet to find a 270 that H4831 didn't produce great groups and velocity with most bullets. But I only have four 270's so what do I know......

As Justahunter noted, 4064 works pretty well in 270's, and is probably unfortunate that it is generally overlooked in recent times, When I got into 270's and reloading, about 50 years ago, 4060 was a commonly used powder in the 270.

I'm odd man out. I have four too (3 M700s and an M70) and have shot a lot of different powders and bullets in them. The M700s all shot both RL22 and Ramshot Hunter faster and more accurately. My M70 I havent worked with as much so can't say definitively until I do some more shooting when the weather cooperates, but it shoots the 130 Paritions with Magpro excellent at nearly 3200 fps.

I have owned more than ten 270s and have always used IMR 4350 or IMR 4831 in them, mostly because the late Ed Matunas said to use them in his handloading articles in American Hunter back in the 1980s. Anywhere from 54 to 56 grains of either IMR or H 4350 has worked well for me with 130 grain bullets. Two more grains of IMR 4831 works as well and is generally 50 fps faster. I have always used the 4350s as I had lots of it around. My current (and only) 270 has a custom Shilen 24" barrel. 55 grains of 4350 gives me over 3,100 fps and excellent accuracy with Barnes TSX bullets. I have Mag Pro and RL-26 and will have to try them for some more velocity.

There is nothing wrong with using the Reloder powders or good old H 4831. I just happened to use 4350 first and stuck with it.

The snow finally melted back enough for me to set up my chronograph. Win 70 stainless CRF 24" Bbl. Using 59 grs H-4831 gave me a disappointing 3059fps with the Barnes 129gr LRX.. Switching to Rel-19 57grs gave me 3114fps right off. This is a light load for this rifle. Stepping up to 58grs I shot my years old chronograph into several pieces. Easy bolt lift , Not the slightest sign of pressure. Barnes manual shows 3211 FPS with a max load 59.5grs. Will resume when my new chrono gets here. Stay tuned..

OK. Bought a new Caldwell Ballistic chronograph. Today finally got to shoot again . This 270 load is right out of the Barnes manual. Also is a max load in the Barnes manual. 129 gr Barnes LRX. I used 59.5gr Rel 19. Win 70 270 24" Bbl. Win brass, Win LR primer. 12' in front of chrono. 3259 fps. Barnes manual used federal 210M primers. This velocity is getting into 270 WSM territory. Manual shows 3211fps so my rifles shoots slightly faster. BC of this bullet is .469. I find this load very satisfying. Still to much snow for me to use my range. Maybe in a week or two. Good accuracy will be the cherry on top of this rifle. Might add the Barnes manual list this load with their 130gr TSX/TTSX bullet. The LRX because it is a longer bullet than the TSX has a little less bullet body contacting the rifling , This allows it to have less friction & slipperier going down the barrel. Hope this info is of interest to you 270 shooters out there. Remember, squeeze that trigger.

I'm using 140 SST in front of 55gr. of Hunter with CCI primers. I measure to the ogive. 2.665.
velocity 3030-3040 out of TC venture. 24" I could go hotter but this load works for me.. I looked up the old loading data, 56gr gave me 3100+ but accuracy suffered.
Reason I like this load, I don't have to adjust my scope when I shoot factory 130 TTSX. My CDS scope is made for 130 ttsx at 3100. The other day I shot a 8" gong 3 for 3 with the SST at 625 yards (or something like that) using my CDS dial for TTSX.
SST is a lot cheaper to plink and shoot than the TTSX

All of them do something better than the 30-06, but none of them do everything as well.

I agree shooting a C&C bullet does take the cost of shooting down. Once I have this rifle sighted in I'll play around & see if I can find a less expensive bullet for practice. Hopefully there is a C&C bullet that will shoot close to this LRX. We all shoot the majority of our shots at targets. Save the expensive bullets for what counts. With all the snow I've had this winter I am for sure anxious to put some rounds down range.

My 270 load data begins and ends with 130 gr ballistic tips or 130 accubond over H4831 and a CCI 250 primer. I start at 57 gr and add powder until she hits 3100 fps. Usually 60 to 61 gr.

Fired 5 groups today with my backup gun. Average group size was .723100 yards

57g H4831
CCI 200
Federal Brass
150gr Sierra Game King
COAL @ SAMMI

Also shoots about 4 inches @ 500m. Ought to do just dandy!

I was told that Hornady spire points shoot very close with Barnes. Anyhow, I just bought some of them and loaded a few up for my .270 (which I plan on using the 130TTSX) Hard to beat Hornadys for about anything, ha.

What velocity are you getting? I use the same powder and charge with a 150 gr. speer and get 2800 fps.

Hey Jim would be interested to hear if you come up with a C&C bullet that will hit the same spot as the Barnes mono..That would be great info, if it's a yes or no..I've got some Hornady factory seconds 6.5 129 gr bullets & they shoot several inches away from my Barnes mono's.

I had asked around on several forums/experts and they all said that the Hornady/Barnes have almost same B.C., toughness, friction, etc that they "almost always" shoot to the same place. I'm kind approaching mine backwards. I'm working witht he Hornady 130sp and will use that baseline for my 130TTSX. I hope to go shoot here in just a little while so we will see.

I sent you a email asking you to chrono that R19 load you have at cold temp. I'm sure it still gets cold at night at your place, ha. If you could see just how (if any) much speed is affected, I'd love to hear it. I used the 240W ( '06 case size) and R19 from "kinda cold" to 75 deg down in Texas with no issues at all. I'm thinking "just maybe" R19 is kinda case specific as to temp wonkiness ( is that a word? ha) Thanks pard.

The load of 59.5 grs of Rel 19 with the Barnes 129gr LRX was shot in the morning here at my place. Temps were about 35 dg. . Vel was 3259 fps from my 24" Bbl.
