Chicken 1/4s are about as cheap as it gets around here for real food as well. Pork loin slices also are usually priced quite low for those who can stand them.

Fryers were $.89 last weekend.
Roasted two, one for supper, the other lunches.
Boiled one with onion, celery, carrots. Picked meat, strained broth, kept veggies.
Will be a pot pie tomorrow night. (Peas will be added.)

Richard, next time you're hungry for C&D try this non tradition recipe. The addition of heavy cream threw me at first and I actually postponed making it for quite sometime.
The heavy cream liquid remaining in my pot after I had devoured all the good stuff was used to make a simple fish chowder that was killer.

Try it my friend.

Local store had whole pork shoulder roasts for $0.88 / lb. Got about 22.5 lbs for just under $18 . . . boned & ground them for pork burgers or sausage. 19 lbs vac sealed and in the freezer.

I much prefer Rollins's doughy dumplings to the peaked biscuit type that Richard used. (Hopefully, we're still friends.) I would add the celery, carrots, and peas that Rollins disdains.

Great. Enjoy. I'm severely lacking in culinary skills when matched against some of the folks here so YouTube and such become my rock and inspiration if I want to eat well.

Have 4 of those pork shoulders in the freezer. Slow cooker is your friend, can make many dishes from these shoulders. Such as pulled pork (sandwiches, tacos, burritos...etc.), BBQ (just add favorite BBQ sauce), diced pork, potatoes and mushroom soup with condiments of your choice, just use your imagination. Another idea is to buy a whole pork center loin when they go on sale. Sliced into chops they can be a little on the dry side but I have found that baked with Shake and Bake they remain moist and taste pretty good ( only take about 20 minutes to reach 145*F)

Wife does a lot of canning. Everything from venison roast, to sweet and sour chicken. All I have to do is steam rice and dump something over it. Instant supper

Chicken legs and thighs, when on sale, $.29/lb.

That's even cheaper than cabbage on sale, at $.39/lb.

One of our favorite deals is leftover fresh turkeys after holidays.
I cut out the breasts. 1 or two meals, depending on size, fried breast.
The legs quarters are left whole and roasted on stuffing. 1-2 meals.
The neck and carcass are boiled with onion, carrot, and celery.
The meat and broth are made into soup, or frozen for later.

Up to five good meals for $15.
