That is a great frontier era rifle. Do you think it was factory engraved ? I doubt it. It is said, the only thing more rare than an engraved 1866 is an unengraved 1866...

It seems strange Winchester would produce a rifle that long after the introduction of centerfire ammo. I read somewhere that they were popular and were less expensive so that's partly why they made them for so long.
Shrap, that closeup photo of the left saddlering side really show's how nice that rifle is.

That's interesting, thanks for sharing. My neighbor passed last fall and his estate had an auction of some of his stuff last week. I was surprised to see an 1866 SRC on the bill. It was all original, unengraved and it was a joy to get to handle such a piece of history. I was short of time and didn't know enough about them to get in too deeply so I bowed out. His longtime business partner bought it.
