My question is about the .410 load of TSS #9 shot. Spoke with Federal customer service about tungston shot compatibility in older shotguns. All he could tell me was the ammunition was compatible in something like "modern firearms in good condition." And all he could say further was that with the full length shot cup/wad it would "probably" be OK but the decision is left to the customer. Danger being possible scoring of the barrel if the shot wore thru the shot cup. I've seen numerous examples of users running the ammo in less than current single shots and I've seen no report of barrel damage. But the little Ithaca drop-lever single shot I'm thinking about does not need to be ruined. It's the gun my father in law gave my wife when she was 12 or so. Hell hath no fury comparable to hers if I damage that shotgun. So, anybody actually checked the barrel of their older .410 after shooting TSS?? Another gun that might be used is a TC Contender pistol in .45/.410. "Choke" adapter is a threaded 2" or so straight rifled piece with heavy lands to stop the spin. Interested in any first hand information there as well. Thx

Not a gun writer but I found this info on the old gobbler web site about an older A5. Probably a good question to ask over there they talk about TSS alot.

If the shotgun isn't steel safe I wouldn't run TSS through it.

After the first shot the rest are just noise.

Yeah, I’ll dispute that too. I shoot hevi 13 and tss out of super full chokes (.650 in a 12ga) all the time without any ill effects. As do thousands of other ppl. Those are turkey loads though, with small shot from #7 to #9. You might run into issues if you shoot large shot sized at waterfowl through a full choke. Then again, maybe not. I also have a couple dead coyote chokes that I shoot hevishot size T and #4 buck through on a regular basis. It’s made for it. No issues there either

Oh, and believe it or not, deer bite. Fairly hard.

Let me clarify. Should have in original. Many have older guns they are always wondering if they can shoot steel in. I myself have one of the earliest 870s made. It has improved fixed choke. Would I shoot steel? Yes because of the improved. But very judiciously. The wars on nontoxic are very heavy too. Just saying. You most likely have recent guns. Read again the OP and you will see where I am coming from.

Some info on the Federal load along with a description and picture of the shot cup, shot and buffer used. Looks like Federal is doing their best to keep the shot out of contact with gun metal. Found especially interesting the shot cup used has been changed from a 3 slit to a 2 slit for 2019.

I've been running posts here and also on the Turkey Hunting site trying to find first hand input on firearm compatibility with the #9 tss. From here forward I'll limit my posts to the Turkey forum.

Not sure when Ithaca went to modern steels I wouldn't risk a fine old double a single may be less affected. If you are doing your own loading Ballistic Research used to cut mylar wraps for large size steel loads. These and a buffer like Grex would help some. If you can't get a definitive answer then I might try one and check before and after with a bore scope for scoring and measure for expansion. Light scoring can be removed with polishing. A belled choke would most likely need to be replaced with a tube.

Think about this.
A new shotgun may be far less costly and emotionally far more gratifying than the trouble that could arise from ruining her shotgun.
