I have never shaken that feeling of walking up on a downed elk, taking in the size of it and thinking, "what the hell have I done?" Oh, yeah. Done that many times. You look at that very dead lump on the ground, then you consider where you are and how close the nearest wheels can go. Then you say 'Oh, shxt'.

While difficult at times, DIY Solo hunts are so rewarding. The sense of accomplishment in overcoming unfamiliar country, harsh weather and the silent emptiness of being alone adds something that is hard to describe.
