Managed to find a factory original carbine stock [but for the Whiterline pad] for this little beauty. It's a 1963 .243 ADL 700 that shoots wee bug holes with 85gr Noslers and 70gr Bergers. These early button rifled 700s are accurate - this one likes hot loads!

Now to refinish the stock to an oil finish.

Dang sure are shooters. Just traded a 30-06 to a neighbor that would shoot Sub MOA with just about anything... Wish I could find an early one in 308.

I like.

Early ones in 308 seem to bring a premium.

Here are my two carbines...BDL in 308. ADL is 222. Both came from members here on the Fire.

I've had 2 of them, a 222, SN 3333, that I sold in a moment of dumb and a 6MM REM MAG with the MAG x'd out, SN 579xx, that I still have.

Don’t want to sound stupid but I don’t recall a 6mm rem mag. Did you mean 6.5 mag ? Edk

I saw one in 6mm Rem in a pawn shop a few months ago. They had a high price on it, and wouldn't come off it for 30 days, so they said. Went back after 30 days, and it was gone. Either they lied about the price, or else somebody really wanted it bad.

No, I don't mean 6.5 REM MAG.

My knowledge of this Remington quality control error comes from John Lacy's book.

According to Lacy, Remington had considered calling the reintroduced 244 REM the 6MM REM MAG and had roll stamp dies made to mark the barrels with that name. It appears that someone at Ilion didn't get the message that a decision had been made to reintroduce the 244 REM as the 6MM REM, so in early 1963 a small number of Remington rifles chambered in 6MM REM had the barrels stamped with the should have been discarded, 6MM REM MAG, dies. When the error was noticed, someone at Ilion decided to save the barrels by over-stamping the MAG with Xs, rather than pulling the barrels and replacing them with correctly stamped barrels. There is a copy of the internal Remington "Oops" memo from the plant in Ilion to HQ in Bridgeport, CT., on page 168.

EDIT: Lacy's serial number data suggests that most, if not all, of the 700 with the 6MM REM MAG barrels stamps were assembled in March 1963.

Lacy's book is now 30 years old and it would be nice if someone with plenty of time, motivation, and a thick enough skin to ignore the snipers would update it.

I see carbines in 30-06 often. I had a chance to buy a NIB carbine in 222 several years ago but it didn't happen

This one is in the 67XXX serial number range. It came to me with a vintage Weaver 3-9 OA scope and adjustable rear mounts, but a totally modern Remington tupperware stock.

Though I missed a mint ADL carbine stock on E-bay earlier this year I am pleased to have found this one.

Assuming that the rifles were assembled in serial number order, 67xxx would probably fall within the production range for May/June 1963.

Actually according to the barrel code it's:

K = 1963

C = April

Serial # 671XX

My 700 in 6MM REM MAG has a March 1963, KA, assembly code.

I really admire these older 700s. My 222 barrel code indicates March of 63. The 308 was 1964, I believe. Grouser- looks like you have a keeper!

I know next to nothing about refinishing stocks and don't take my word for gospel!
But the finishes on those early Remington 700's (I have been told!) are very difficult to remove!
Maybe you know more about that?
I hope it is not as hard as several people have told me that it is to remove.
I think that "bowling pin" finish was referred to (advertised as) "RKW" finish.

Anyone here removed the finish of the older Remington 700's (BDL's?) and had trouble?

I used CitriStrip to remove the finish on a walnut 700 Mountain Rifle stock. It required multiple applications, particularly in the checkering, but it worked.

Hey 260 rem guy. Thanks for that info. Never heard about it so now I have something new to look for. They should have known a Mag cartridge without a belt would never fly. Lol thanks ed k
