I have worked up loads for both the 7-08 and the 284.
I was pleased with what the 7-08 will do, but the 284 does it better. At least for me.

I am quite pleased with my 19" Shaw barrel on a R77 getting 2960 fps and small groups
using a 160 gr Nosler Partition.
That is about 140 gr velocity for the 7-08.

Yep

Sure, but by this reasoning eventually you’d get to the absurd; for example, the 30/06 won’t do more than the 300 Blackout. 😉

If it makes your socks go up and down, that's all the reason you need to do so.

And only because no one has mentioned it yet; ***COUGH*** 7SAUM. blush

I first intended to chamber the 7 SAUM but the ‘smith balked because of his history of feeding problems with it. Said the 284 fed like baby food in comparison. I haven’t regretted it. And it’s certainly enough in a five and a half lbs.

I went with the 284 case but decided on a 375 bore. The 375-284 is a fun little round. Built it on a VZ24 Mauser action, iron sights, Boyds maple stock and an ER Shaw 375 unchambered blank cut down to 21". Loads of fun shooting 270 gr Hornady RN blems, usually over a 4895 powder.

Back in the late '80s a ULA in 284 was the hot ticket. I've never owned a 284 but have always like it. To me a 284 always had a cool factor which I realize doesn't really mean anything in reality.

It’s actually a well-designed cartridge that back then might have had some rifles with longer magazines and throats, but then back there in its inception they didn’t care about such things or have the bullets to make a difference either.

I think it was Jon Sundra who once commented there wasn’t much one couldn’t do with a 7 mm (I think) that could push a 150 to 3000. Well, the 284 can check that box in sporter barrels.

Hits easy 3100 with 140-gr ttsx and R17 and goes, or has, about .65 MOA at 400 yds. For five shots. I doubt I need anything more for the big game I will be doing.

So far it’s accounted for nice cinnamon black bear, a big mule deer buck, a whitetail buck at an even 500 yds and a 6x6 bull elk. My favorite right now. It’s a well-designed cartridge that has been hiding in plain sight.

If you want a 284 Win get a 284 Win. Plenty of good things about it. I still use a couple 30-06s, they seem to kill stuff just fine too.

If I were going to want a light recoil 7mm:

- sub 6 lbs
- 8 or 8.5 twist barrel

And there are some good long 7mm bullets out there. Magazine and throating would definitely be good considerations. I might want a long action for it, but if a short action is important just know it may have some impact on seating depth options and resulting velocity. Or you could be cool with 100 fps less velocity, and want a short action. You've only got to please you.

Going to the trouble is what keeps smiths in the business .. grin

I can think of less practically justified choices [with regard to custom and how folks spend their money]
than just wanting a .284win

ie; like those that have customs that live as safe queens with useless ornate engraving and fancy pimp walnut
..and careful chambering selection cause they are worried about resale value
when their estate is settled....what are they thinking? .. smirk

Yes sir I certainly did. Since spring is here, I have been working on my new tape-stretcher for measuring walleyes — it make s every fish 25% longer. That must have been on my mind.

I've no skin in the game--if he doesn't want a 7/08 why would I try and convince him to get a 7/08? And I've nothing against a Fieldcraft, they're a good rifle. Hell, if he wants to use a Dakota Model 10 action that's fine with me too!

I've convinced myself the best chambering in 7mm is something in the realm of a 7 Mashburn.

Wasn’t suggesting you were; light recoiling 7 mm sub 6 pounds, 8 twist with careful consideration of magazine and throating for good long 7 mm bullets ... is a Fieldcraft. No more, no less.

The one and only 284 Win I had was built on a long action Remington. Zero invasion of the bullet into my powder space. Fun rig. Shot very well too. Loony fun times. So,on a long action,I'll opt for my favorite .284 the 7 Rem mag. The 284 Win is a great case with a lot going for it. I wouldn't sway anyone from building one. Life is short. Build what you want.

I've had multiple 284Win's on 700's.

Pass the Fieldcraft 7-08.

I would highly recommend a new Win 70 action as the base. Use the WSM mag box and follower and it will feed perfectly. Be sure to either replace the ejector with the WSM one or just rework the existing one. The WSM mag box will give you 3.050” internal length and works great for the 284. I’ve build the same in 284 Win and 25-284 and they made great hunting rifles. The 25-284 is one of my favorite deer rifles.

I've only got (3) 25-284's.

Pass the Fieldcraft 7-08.
