We burned the irrigation ditches and the grass is outrunning the deer!

Asparagus, anybody?

I have had people asking if our asparagus is up yet.
We have a pretty prolific patch, and share pounds of the stuff.
Too cold yet, it's coming though.

Unfortunately, the grass will need mowed before enjoying any asparagus.
And, we will be mowing after quitting the asparagus.

My asparagus is up, and I will eat some this week. The grass is nice and green here, and I can give a good dose of Urea as being part of the reason. I've mowed my yard 3 times now, and the rain over the weekend will mean it'll need it again this week. Peas, potatoes, and sweet corn are all up in the garden. Apple trees will bloom this week. Things are looking good.

When the pastures first get green the food value is low because it is about 80% water.

How do you know when to release the live stock for the bester nutrition?

For horses that new green is a recipe for founder. Lot of sugars in grass that starts in cool weather

Last two days have really accelerated the greening over this way.

We are lagging but the last week really perked the grass up. Cows are chasing it now. Got the mag blocks out.

That was one of the rites of spring.
Picking FRESH asparagus every day.
On the ditch banks and neighbors orchard.
The "wild" was not as big as the stuff today, but sure was more flavorful.
Still have my asparagus cutter though there is not much use for it here!

Asparagus as part of supper tonight, but from Mexico.

Pastures are really greening up, growing and the turkeys are shagging in the yard and the pasture.

Indeed. I always advocate for gradually increasing a horses time on new green grass, especially those that are hay-fed the rest of the year.
