Got a curiosity question for you Winchester gurus.

I have a M94 30-30 that my dad bought in the early 50's. Sometime in the late 50's/early 60's, Redfield introduced a 2X long eye relief scope specifically for the 94 and Dad installed one on this 30-30.

Question is this. I know alterations generally devalue a gun from collector's standpoint. But this being a fairly rare, period scope, designed for this particular rifle, I'm wondering if this combo might be more desirable for a collector?

As I said, this is just a curiosity question. The gun ain't for sale.

What say you?

As a rule, no. I don't know many shooters/hunters who would pay extra for that rig either.

How is the scope mounted? If non-factory d&t was required, gun is devalued.

If it's the Redfield M294 setup like pictured below then the barrel has been D&T for the base. They come up for sale on ebay now and then and don't sell for a lot. It's kinda a cool setup but from a collectors point of view it doesn't add a premium, just the opposite.

Leupold made a similar scope and mount. I believe these rigs are the genesis of the Scout Rifle concept. My father had the ubiquitous Weaver K4 in a Weaver side mount on his M94. I believe D&Ting your rifle decreased the collector value. On the other hand, I think it is the best way to scope a M94.

Doc: I agree that it’s the best way to scope a pre AE 94. Much better than the side mount on my dads old Model 8 35 Rem!

I have seen the Redfield scope and mount/ M-294 at shows in Wisconsin for in the $300 range,I would not pay that but they seem to get it.I suppose if your gun is drilled for it you got no choice

Certainly no longer a collector's candidate...BUT....if I wanted a classic for a nostalgic hunt then I don't feel (at least for me) $300 is out of the question. Where else could you pick up a piece of classic steel and walnut for that price?

I believe bg10b6 means only the Redfield scope and mount for $300, not including a rifle as part of the deal.

I have one of those redfield 294 scope setups mounted on a 1950's model 94,in my mind it is not a collectable but a decent hunting setup. On the other hand collectors in Houston had one for sale for over $1100 a few weeks ago and it sold,i guess they think their collectable !!! crazy Don
