Got there bright and early Saturday. Lots and lots of Savage stuff. Some nice and some "so-so". Met Ralph there. Every year I see him he says this is his last, but I'll bet he's there next year. This was the first year I did not see Doug Farey (DGF). That was quite a void as he and his buddy Max France always had some great stuff. I met up with Marshfello, Fug1899, and a first for me. I met PoconoJack. That was totally unexpected., but a pleasant visit. I found a 99F in really nice shape. It was a .303 Sav with high luster blue and a 22" barrrel You could see some freckling but that would be expected. No extra holes. The owner said he had in in Tulsa and he said, "you wouldn't believe how many times that gun got picked up and put down". Seems like an ad for Planet Fitness. Well, I also put it down and walked away. BUT I kept going back for another look.Seiral number is 3146XX. Puts it at 1928. Not too shabby for 91 years old. It will go nicely with the checkered F I have in .300. with a 24" barrel

That’s a damn nice 99 you got there!

Wow, you don't see high luster blued receivers that late very often. (Or do you?) Nice gun. I'm sure it'll like its new home better than than the nomadic life its been living!

What's the stuff at the juncture of barrel and receiver? Camera trick?

High looking front sight? Did it mount a tang sight at one time I wonder?

Wehn I got the gun home, I couldn't budge the barrel fro the receiver. It has been many years since the T/D feature was utilized, if ever. I put a removal tool I made, (also made one for Maddog) onto the barrel and gave it a hefty twist. It separated. When I screwed it back in, I used never seize on the threads. What you see is the overflow. It has since been removed. I don't pay much attention to sights other than either they are there or not. If I ever shoot it, I will address that at that time.

Yes, Rick and I both picked that one up and laid it down at least once each. Was tempting.

It is in the range of the late batch of mirror blue receivers. First we thought they were just 99G's mostly, but now that we're looking we've seen them on 99A, 99B, 99G, 99F, and even 99H. But not everything in the range is a mirror blue. Keep your eyes open for guns in the range of 290,000 to 320,000 and get details if you can.

Good grab, Stephen!

Very nice. My 303 F is a 1926 vintage. Different front sight configuration, blade vs integral ramp. Shoots better than I do. In my humble opinion, one of the best handling ...feeling 99s to hunt with. Great grab.

I started going to that gun show in the early 80's when I was a student at SU.

Haven't been in about 5 or 6 years now.

That is always a good show

Stephan, your rifle would be an early one for the dovetailed integral base front sight. I've seen 1927 vintage 99's with the 1926/27 integral base and pinned front sight. See page 68 of my book for a photo comparing all the early sights.

Nice one Stephen. cool

I regret the 1920's 250-3000 F I let go a dozen years back. Thought I'd see a better one someday. Not happening. frown

Thanks, everyone. It is nothing spectacular, just a nice example in original condition. It is not flawless, just honest.
