I own a couple of M77/22 and love them dearly, they are getting pricey but you may be able to find one. It pains me to admit but the post advocating a Japan maid Win 52 would be a killer gun to get but it will go well above your price limit. Shot a Mossberg 44 US for a while and that was a shooter but not a field carry rifle.

They are as close to a full-sized center fire that I think you’ll find. More accurate than the shooter.

They typically go for closer to $700 than $500.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I like the win 52 idea but I get cranky if I don’t eat for months. I am looking to cross paths with a cz 452 American but for now I will look into the Marlin xt.
