I've been going through images of my 1950s EGs, Fs, & Rs. I seem to find no rythm, rhyme or reason to whether a stock is fluted. I have had fluted and un-fluted models from the era. One would have expected all Featherweight models to be fluted but that's not the case. Reason? A number of 250s: A 1946 303 RT, an Eg and an F: A fluted 300 F: The reason I ask is because I picked up another early F 768XXX [1955] today, I expected to be so enhanced but it was not fluted either???

To me the post war EG never had flutes. The R and F, on the other hand, sometimes had them and sometimes didn't. And I don't know if Savage's intermittent use of flutes on the 99 corresponded with specific years of production or not. But I do know if I get myself a good example of a post-war F it darned well will have flutes.
I see you 1920 has a pistol grip cap. Some say the 1920 and 20/26 never had them. My 20/26 has one. At least the inletting looks factory to me. Do you think yours is factory original?

I like the fluted combs better.
But I never let that stop me from buying one that wasn't.

Buying one? What if it is a plain jane, vanilla 300 Sav. F, not fluted and without a compass in the butt-stock? Would you still splash a few Franklins for merely a common 300 F?

Fluted 99F’s started around 1957, earlier weren’t. 99EG’s and 99R’s weren’t fluted in the 50’s to best of my knowledge, tho some of the 1930’s 99R’s were.

My favorite for user friendly and looks as far as fluting goes is the DL. I think some of the later F's had the same style fluting as well, but I'm not sure which others.

Yeah, I kind of like those “dished out” flutes too on that period of 99.

SS99VG, that was my first 99 [ yah it had curb appeal! ] so I came to believe that all 99s would be fluted. I prefer that look. In comparison the latest 1950s F I picked up looks un-finished to my eye.

I like the fluting that sometimes shows up on the early 1899's the best. But the 1930's 99R's and 1950's 99F's are good as well.

To my eye, the fluted comb rifles look complete, the others are less. Why wouldn't you flute the comb of a rifle to allow the thumb a little room? Never understood that with the 99's. The post war R's could have certainly benefited and lost some oz in the bargain. The EG's, R's and all F's shoulda been done that way.
Nice looking R Calhoun.

I’m very new to this, but lately my eye has been noticing the differences in the relief, or definition, or ‘depth’ of the scalloped cut-out (created term) of the stock just above and behind the trigger. No clue if it’s a gun-to-gun thing or model-to-model difference. Just something I observe.

Thank ya. I guess I probably should have put up the variationso of the R. Earliest at the bottom, last at the top.

My pre war R's have the fluted comb. The post mil R's don't. Some of my pre-mil F's have it and some don't. The only EG that has it is the late 1959 vintage rifle that came from the factory with a matching number F buttstock. All my post mil C's have a fluted stock but it's shaped different than the pre-mil guns. The post mil A has flutes that look like the pre-mil F's.

I remember seeing a large safe full of late production 1950s Featherweights at Jed's back when, many with hang tags in mint condition, and now I think an F simply looks unfinished without the fluting:

The F's do look incomplete cuz some had the fluted comb and you see how much better they looked. The EG's, well, none I ever saw had a fluted comb but they would have been improved as well. I had 2 F's that were fluted, a 308 and a 243. Both were above 900,000. Still have the 308.
And it would have helped the 22 pumps too.

From the data that Drew collected on R/RS's the fluted stock was added at around 345xxx. So about the first year, year and a half were none fluted.
