Etahn Edwards: I got to work with John Wayne on a movie filmed in Seattle - I thoroughly enjoyed interacting with him there on that project for a couple of weeks.
Then years later I got to renew acquaintance with him as he kept his yacht there in Seattle (and stayed aboard a lot!) at the Queen City Yacht Club.
He was always a friendly and non-uppity man.
Good for him on that.
Word is (and this is my favorite John Wayne factoid) when he was asked to attend an upcoming star placing ceremony on Hollywoods Walk of the Stars he had to delay the ceremony until the special sand he wanted to be used in the cement for his star's foundation could be obtained!
He sent for the sand he wanted used, from the beach on the island of Iwo Jima!
And that took some time and doing.
Always admired and enjoyed him.
Rest in peace John Wayne.

drover The Shepherd of the Hills is indeed a good movie. It doesn't follow the book exactly, but few movies do. I tried to get a VHS copy of it years ago, but none were available. This puzzled me since it was an A list movie made well after Wayne established himself as a star. It also went a long ways towards popularizing Branson as a tourist destination. Somehow, whoever owned the movie rights had tied it up and wouldn't allow its release. Then Sheplar's Western Stores got ahold of the rights and gave a ton of the newly minted videos to people during their grand opening in Springfield, MO. I narrowly missed getting a copy.

Not many mentioned “Red River”
It’s another one of my favorites & definitely deserves to be in the top 10 of JW movies, IMO.
The American Film Institute listed it as the top 5th greatest Western of all time back in 2008.
Don’t know that I agree with that but it’s definitely a great JW film.

Don’t know that I agree with that but it’s definitely a great JW film. Certainly a top JW film. Definitely in my top 50 westerns.

In my opinion the number one thing that would have made the movie better, and more closely fitting the written version is to have cast
Ben Johnson instead of John Wayne.
Read the book and honestly decide for yourself if Wayne was right for the part.

In my opinion the number one thing that would have made the movie better, and more closely fitting the written version is to have cast
Ben Johnson instead of John Wayne.
Read the book and honestly decide for yourself if Wayne was right for the part. Which book ??? I for one loved Ben Johnson. One of my favorite actors of the old timers. And he came from a real ranching family and was also a World Champion Rodeo Performer. But he was no John Wayne.

To me Wayne just can't come across as a revenge seeking killer such as Ethan was, I think Johnson could have pulled it off. The movie Hondo was also a great one. Yep. Another great one! Watched it again a few weeks back. I’ll be watching The Searchers again on GRITT TV tonight for probably the millionth time. 🤠

Tracks, I read the book "The Shootist" before I saw the movie and as I read it, in my minds eye, I saw Jack Palance as the actor best suited for that part.
