One in the used rack today. What a cool old rifle.
Pretty sure it was a Frankenstein gun. The finish\patina on the receiver and barrel were a bit different. Not to mention the full octagon barrel was only about 20” and it had a short Mag tube. Guessing it was cut down? Can’t find a pic or mention of one in that configuration? Definitely not original sights.
Oh well. Don’t know a thing about loading for 32-40 anyways.

Don't know about your find. I'm waiting for the right Savage in 32-40 to come along. If the price was right you could try it and if you don't like it you could sell it later.

The .32/40 was the 6.5 Creedmoor of it's day, it was a notable target cartridge, popular in all kinds of shooting competitions. It would be a fun cartridge to play with, for awhile, anyway (their standards were limited by mostly iron sights) so it might not be "all that" compared to what you're used to shooting., but shooting ANYthing is fun.

Grab it and have fun, I got one from CHinNH here last year, I use H-335 to push 178gr [hardish- 15 on brinnel scale] cast lead flat nosed bullets to a very easy 1600 fps, don't think a deer or pig will hold one either, i'll hunt it this fall.

I thought they were .321" I did a Google search and found them with bore diameters ranging from .316 all the way to .330". I guess it varied a lot. Maybe .321 was the norm though.

I’ve always loaded 0.321-0.323 cast in mine....I’m sure there where different diameter bores but mine have all slugged .320 and have had several (Winchester 1894s, Marlin 1893s and a Savage 99)
Not trying to argue just saying.

PennDog Cool. I know I read years ago about a 32-40 with a .318" bore. That number must've just stuck in my mind.
