I finally decided to go ahead and get a rifle that would have been at home on the Buffalo ranges when Sharps was still in Hartford. I have a Shiloh 1874 Hartford in .44-77 SBN with a 32 inch #1 1/2 barrel with the Hartford collar, military style butt stock, pewter friend tip, buckhorn rear, globe front and a mid range vernier sight on the way. It comes with brass so I need to get the dies and bullet molds together. This will be my first .44-77 and first .44 cal rifle so suggestions and advice are welcome. I will be hunting deer and pigs with it and plinking for fun. I guess I need to see about that retirement Buffalo hunt soon!

Congrads! I owned a Ballard rifle in 44-77, was built by the New Ballard Co. and took a 250lbs Black bear with it! One shot it was down by the time that cloud of white smoke cleared!

Very NICE, congrats pacecars, I have a 44-77 build going on up at Shiloh right now, will be shooting 475gr paper patch bullets in it when finished, will most likely be in the 1350 fps neighborhood with OE black powder, I'm past ready to get started.

BTW, I have a little Shiloh #3 Sporter in 45-70 with a military butt, try as I might, I could never keep the rifle still during recoil, it bucked from side to side between my shoulder pocket and that ball of muscle that makes up the outside of your shoulder, a small 1/2" rubber recoil pad sawed through along the hard plate in the front to conform to the curve of the butt placed tight inside a leather lace on recoil pad solved the 'slippery' problem, also lengthened the LOP so my eyes fall directly behind the sights on shouldering.

As may be expected, group size shrunk dramatically. smile

I blame you some for this one! After following your posts on the Historic Shooting site helped make up my mind on caliber choice. I will still probably order a lighter version in one of the .40 calibers for a dedicated deer gun but the “Buffalo Gun” won out for now

You bet pacecars, I bought all remaining 44-77 brass in stock from Buffalo Arms yesterday, just got it in from Fed-X while I was in town awhile ago, they look very nice.

A/C took a dump and this one is expendable. Selling a couple others. It is also a little heavier than what I wanted it for. Also I am fickle.
