Didn't have the scope. Had to take the rear sight and plastic sleeve off, for clearance.

I lucked into a near-new 581 for $125 (sticker price) at a local store. Couldn't say Ill take it fast enough ha ha.
But a good clean version of either should be around 250. I'd go more if it has a nice stock. 'Cause I like pretty. Some were walnut or cherry.
400 for a rough one doesn't add up for me.

A little patience and some good shopping skills should get you into a 580/581/582 for around $200. They were extremely inexpensive rifles when they came out, but they always had a reputation of shooting way above their price scale... I've been more than impressed with the one I picked up a long time ago for about half that money. I've thought about upgrading it several times with a nicer stock, etc... but why bother? It does what I need it to do with so little bother it is just about perfect just as it is.... The one upgrade I would do if I could- if a 541T or 541S barrel ever comes up for a reasonable price I will swap out the barrel just for a little extra carrying and pointing weight. From the guys I've talked to who have made this modification, it really transforms the rifle and may improve the accuracy a bit....

Hmmm...think a 582 was tube? Anyway, John Reed makes stainless mags for the 581.

Bob, if you are going to swap out a barrel, find a gunsmith that specializes in RF. Get a reamer that engraves the bullet when the bolt is closed and accuracy will be beyond belief.

I had 581/582/541-S, we killed a lot of ground squirrels with them. They all shot around an inch at 100 yards in the Calm with Green tag, cci std velocity, but we used a hunting load of cci mini mag hp 40g that shot 1 1/4-1.5" at 100.

Clean the barrel every 250 rounds with good RF brushes from Brownell's, bed the action, float the barrel, re srping the triggers on the 581 and you will be shocked at the accuracy.
