Well, I'm not convinced you sound like a yankee, but you've pretty much got the whole "obnoxious, jackass" accent down perfectly.

the weather, or the politics?

I think it is great you can still pack in to hunt where you are, and keep your animals, etc.

Sometimes it's not a matter of survival.
Remember a time when successful business owners lived in houses not hugely different than
their employees? Their vehicle was the single cab work truck?

Now, they need the mansion, the $80k truck...........not paying employees is the easiest way to get there.

If any business in America cannot survive hiring and paying GENUINE AMERICANS a decent wage (no, NOT $8 an hour) to do a job, they should close their business, downsize, and go get a job at Walmart.

Bob in NH, Thanks for posting “your story”. It’s true that there are things more important than where one lays ones head at night or fretting the political change that has overrun the places we grew up in. Family can’t be replaced and those memories made with loved ones can’t be substituted. Growing up out here in the PNW was a great place for a young boy to roam. Fishing, hunting, beaches and boating along with endless wilderness to explore is something I’d never go back and change. I had the type of childhood that many can only dream about. It’s unfortunate that over the last 25+ years the political pendulum has swung wildly to the left but it’s hardly unique to Washington state, it’s happening everywhere and in every state. Running away from the politics of the left, politics that only dominate in the cities here while leaving the other 95% of the state to its conservative ways doesn’t do anything except break up families and destroy long term friendships. My family is the most important thing in the world to me and I’ll be damned if I’m going to break up my family ties so I can run off and hide in a more conservative state.

My mom passed away 3 years ago which leaves dad floundering and lonely. My brothers, sisters and I are all dad has left and I’ll be here by his side until he gets called home with mom. As my wife and I start setting ourselves up for early retirement we likely won’t live anywhere “permanently”. Our goal is to get our house and cabins built up north so the summers can be family time. A time for children, grandchildren, friends and family to gather together and spend time in the most beautiful place on earth fishing, hunting, hiking and laughing. A life spent running from politics is a life spent with screwed up priorities. As frustrating as the modern political climate is and as liberalism seems to creep into every state and locale running away doesn’t seem like a viable strategy. I certainly don’t fault anyone for seeking out their little slice of heaven, wherever it may be, but for my wife and myself we’re happiest when we’re around our loved ones. Because of our attachment to family our strategy is to get our homestead built and hopefully we’ll attract the kids to follow us. If that doesn’t work then momma and I will spend our time in multiple locations with our home base being in Alaska and maybe a place or 2 down here in the lesser 48.

It won’t be long before there are no “red states” so there’ll be nowhere to run to. Texas is purple and quickly turning blue as is every other red state in the union. Running away won’t be an option in the near future because there’ll be nowhere to run to, then what? I’ll choose to be surrounded by the love of family and the laughter of children, I’ll choose adventures and fun over dreading about politics and the divisiveness that politics fosters.

There’s so much more to life than politics and for those that don’t understand that I pity them. Those myopic individuals have relegated themselves to a life of misery while overlooking the blessings that are right in front of them. There’s a HELL of a lot more to happiness than obsessing over what a particular political party is doing or not doing. I feel sorry for those that don’t understand that and that want to inject politics into every aspect of life while ignoring the happiness that’s staring them down.

AcesNeights: If you are happy in that miserable schitthole of a state called taxington then I truly feel sorry for you!
taxington was once a great and enjoyable place to live - I know I was born and raised and lived the first 49 years of my life there!
When taxington started turning to schitt I packed up the VarmintWife, the VarmintSons and my Varmint Life and moved to a place that respects American values, has humanly endurable taxes, low stress lifestyles and somewhat sane politicians!
If you can live with the miserable, politicians, the miserable tax rates (ON EVERYTHING!), the miserable traffic, the miserable mentality of most of the people who live there and the high percentage of low life people there in taxington then I wish you luck, YOU are going to need it!
But 22 years ago I realized I only live ONCE and I sure as hell was not going to live in that miserable schitthole for the second half of my life!
I drove back and forth from Montana to my mother and fathers homes and visited them and a few other relatives two or three times a year for the last 22 years now, and that has worked out well enough for me.
You just keep paying those outrageous taxes (on everything!) and supporting those liberal/socialist/communist anti-American politicians running "taxington" and let them squander it on welfare rats, illegal aliens and all manner of misfits - I'll spend most of my monies on things "I" love!
Reconsider your self destructive plan - get out of that hell hole A.S.A.P.!
YOU, WILL, thank me later, for doing so.
Getting out of "taxington" was just about the best decision I have ever made in my life!
IF... YOU think that politics does NOT effect every aspect of ones life, nowadays, then you are simply a lost cause!
Perhaps not worth saving?
Sheesh man get a hold of reality and get out of "taxington".
Hold into the wind

I always hear people complaining of the wind in WY. Is it really that bad? I spent some time in Laramie (around March), and the Tetons, Shoshone and Yellowstone (around May if I remember correctly) and I didn't experience any strong winds to speak of.

You are a very lucky person, and very wise too! Family is he only thing on this Earth that is really ours - not everyone has been so lucky.

Yes, it gets pretty rough. I80 gets closed frequently due to the wind and snow drifts. VERY common to see semis and camp trailers blown over on their sides. The Summit east of Laramie is iffy in the winter and gets closed a lot. When that happens, the truck stops in Laramie are packed. I had to drive to Cheyenne from NW Colorado every month and figured out fast to take the back roads instead of I80 in the winter. When you were there, did you ever notice the trees along the side of the highway all bent over in the same direction ?
The joke there is that Utah blows and Nebraska sucks.

So the wind is more prevalent during the winter? If so, that would explain the lack of wind I experienced during my time there.

No it's always there, just combined with the snow and below 0 temps makes it worse.

Both my and my wife's families have been in Idaho for well over a century, so it will always be home We sold her family's holdings and used it to pay off all debt on mine incurred during the great recession, and had enough left to buy a vacation home on a lake in Alabama that we finished remodeling last year. In addition, we totally took to heart the medical aspect, and after studying the BEST healthcare opportunities in America, particularly as relates to aging, bought a place in Nebraska with amazing deer and pheasant, but proximate to Omaha. Many have no idea how amazing the medical care is in Omaha. Suffice to say that the only ebola cases cured in history were there...as well, it is the number one area for healthcare for middle eastern royalty and Hollywood for childcare. Last year Buffett scions dedicated the new cancer center at UNO.

Anyway, for us:

I retired at 55 2-1/2 years ago.
Our main home is our ranch in Idaho that's been in my family since 1904.
Our fair weather place is on a lake in Alabama.
We also maintain a place near Omaha, Nebraska for the best healthcare in America...

We are very "lucky" for working 4,000 hours per year over the last 35 years across 23 countries...

Bob in NH, congrats on getting it done cool

I do recall a similar thread from years back tho where the point was made that many people who relocate upon retirement discover all the things they miss about where they spent their whole lives, including proximity to family, and end up moving back.

Grandchildren too can change everything.

You spend anytime along the I-80 corridor Evanston all the way to Cheyenne and you'll be dodging semi trailers that get blown over from the wind that you didn't experience. Winter winds are the worst. High wind areas are all over the State. The relentless high winds is what causes most transplants to leave in their first year here. It'll drive you bat s**t crazy, and you never really get used to it.

Opened the account many years ago - just never used it much until recently. No voodoo. Surprised it matters to anyone that has a life and that can form an opinion without relying on emotion, racism, or envy.
