I have been around Rock Chucks all of my life and have never seen a black one.
Pretty buggers aren't they?
They must be from da hood!

Heard of black woodchucks, but never saw one. Did see an obvious blonde one the other day, much lighter than usual and quite yellow.
What fresh Hell is this?

Living in Florida I haven' seen many rock chucks, My wife's family lives in Indiana and back in the middle
60's after we were married we would go up there every year and I always looked forward to going chuck hunting with
my Winchester 22 hornet, I was 20 years old back then and things have really changed with all the development
they have lost their habitat but that's the same with most wild animals but I have never seen a black chuck.

Cool.. One year when I was visiting Pa. I shot a black woodchuck.. Still have a photo if I can find it..

Garyw: I was chasin guns last Friday way up in Great Falls, Montana (220 miles from my home) and I must have seen 40 Rock Chucks within what I believe is their city limits!
Saw 9 of them on one hole of the golf course on the east or maybe north east side of town.
They seemed to be everywhere I drove that day!
Finally weather set in at about 4:00 P.M. and they all went down - saw no more.
But some do find homes in amongst civilization!
I saw a "calico" colored Marmot (Rock Chuck) in Washington States Olympic National Park (Hurricane Ridge!) many years ago - he was orange, yellow, brown, white and had a couple of small patches of black.
Never saw a black one though and I have seen many tens of thousands of them - including those in Grand Teton and Yellowstone National Parks.
I'll keep lookin.

Alaska and the Yukon Territory have a large ground ground squirrel of brown/tan color except one area
around Jake's Corner on the Alcan where they are black.

quite a few of them located on the Union Pass Gap from Cory to Dubois, Wyo along with mountain sheep and moose. more marmots in lake areas above Pinedale.

Etoh: I don't get down Wyoming way near as much as I used to - love that DuBois country and the Wind River Range!
I am putting that Wind River country on my "to do" list for this summer.
There are some places on this earth I just like to go to and relax - not do nothin - just relax and recharge!
Among these areas are the Bighorn Mountains in Wyoming, the Beartooths in Montana, the Wind River country in Wyoming, Glacier Country in Montana, the Grand Tetons near Jackson, Wyoming and the Tobacco Root Mountain range here in SW Montana.
I can go to these places and just enjoy/meditate/contemplate.
