Finally put a relatively modern scope (Leupold M8 3x) on my 1949 Winchester Model 70 in .257 Roberts. It's a mid-distance relationship, But with 1st 3 rounds of 110 gr. Nosler Accubond at 100 yards--It's love at first sight Please don't tell my wife

That's a good looking rifle. I just mildly followed one on gunbroker that went for a price I could have afforded, if I hadn't just bought a .270. I'd be interested in a .257 or .243 model 70 for my daughter.

Bush, That is a great looking rifle chambered in a wonderful cartridge. . Shortly after acquiring my Pre-64 Roberts, I assembled a randomly chosen load and fired it in two Roberts .The Pre-64 carrying a Lyman 48 WJS and a Ruger No. 1 wearing a Leupold 3.5-10X both shot 1 1/2". I was horrified to see the Mod. 70's bore through a bore scope. It certainly was not representative of the exterior of the rifle. Love Mod. 70s.

Bushmaster1313: Great looking Rifle there. The epitome of a classic Rifle in a classic caliber. Good for you, and enjoy. If I may digress here for a moment. Years ago (1980 or so) myself and some friends attended a gunshow in Spokane, Washington for a long weekend. One of our crew had to leave Saturday night in his own car and headed back home to the Seattle area. Well bright and early Sunday morning this friend calls us at our motel room and begs us to use our money to buy a Transition Model 70 Standard Rifle in 257 Roberts he had been lusting after on Friday and Saturday but had just not "pulled the trigger" on it. Well it put a crimp in our Sunday at the gunshow but we pooled our money and bought the 257 Roberts for our friend. Miffed a bit, but we did it. At the time of sale the seller pulled out from under the table a box of Winchester 257 Roberts ammo and sent it along with the gun. Well to make a long story short on the way home my friend and I decided we would "test fire" our other friends Rifle. So we stopped near Cle Elum, Washington at a gravel pit and "test fired" that 257 Roberts Rifle - twenty times! What a fun gun and the recoil was very mild in that somewhat heavy gun. I have owned other 257 Roberts Rifles (Ruger #1's, Ruger 77's and Remington 722's) but that was the coolest Roberts Rifle I ever shot! Never told our friend about test firing his "dream Rifle" - figured it was small payment for inconveniencing us the way he did. I have three pre-64 Winchester Model 70's in my collection now - two VERY nice Standard Rifles and a mint perfect Super Grade. Again enjoy your "Roberts". Hold into the wind VarmintGuy

He's a closet PETA-phile and serial braggart. Expect more threads of photos of the rifle and his commentary of his undying love. It's a pattern. Hunting pictures hurt his feelings.Doesn't like "blood lust."

People Eating Tasty Animals You don't hunt. You don't handload. You don't gunsmith or tinker. You don't collect in accordance with anyone's accepted definition of collecting; i.e., identifying particular variations, building a reference database, etc. You're not dealing. You only post the same godd mned pictures over and over and over again with the same silly-ass commentary. The only logic I can see is you're seeking approval from strangers. That says a hell of a lot about you, none of it favorable. Just give it a rest.

While Bushmaster's bragging about the same guns is becoming rather redundant, simply because he doesn't meet your narrowly defined reasons for acquiring guns doesn't mean he has less rights in that regard than the rest of us. I don't hunt very much anymore, but I'm continually acquiring more and more hunting rifles. I don't shoot pistol competitions, carry for self defense, target shoot much any more, or hunt with pistols, but I still acquire them as I can afford them. Ditto nice shotguns. And, oops, my "collecting" philosophy doesn't begin to conform to "accepted definition of collecting" you refer to. I don't "deal" either- without a license I can't. My point is, as annoying as Bushmaster's continuous flogging of the same gun over and over is, Mr. Treehorns vindictiveness in that regard is equally unwarranted. Perhaps he's angling for Internet Cop of the Week?

I don't care if I see a picture again. It's nice if there is some new information such as results with a new scope or different ammo. But if not, it's all good. It is an open forum. hell, it's gun porn. It's fun. It's not worth fighting about.

You are entitled to your opinion. It's not an opinion that you're very childlike in your silly repetition. There's no new ground broken with these posts. You're not showing off a new purchase or variation found. You're not sharing handload data. You're not sharing gunsmithing information regarding bedding, repairs, etc. You're not sharing details of a hunt, because you don't enjoy "blood lust." It's the same god-damned rifle with the same silly-ass commentary over and over and over. "I love this rifle." "Look at my rifle." "I have this rifle." I don't know if it's a psychological problem you have or a substance abuse issue, but just give it a rest.

Life's too short. Let Bushmaster 1313 Jackie Treehorn answer that. No one is saying your observations of repetitiveness are incorrect. Why it occurs is really nothing more than your opinion anyway. What a bunch of us seem to be saying is: We don't care. You're constant bitching is as tedious as the thing you complain about.

jackie treehorn: Many years ago when I first started my lobbying campaign to the moderators of this site for a "Winchester Collectors" forum, I envisioned a more civil/sophisticated level of communication and discourse if it ever came to be. I guess I was wrong in that expectation? My eventual victory in attaining a "Winchester Collectors" forum has been dampened by the occasional descent into disrespect for others opinions, experiences and or preferences in this forum. I see no reason for this thread to have degenerated into what it has. I am not criticizing anyone for differing in their opinions or preferences but said differences should be and would be more meaningful if they were done respectfully! I still like that 257 Roberts and enjoy looking at it (again?). Hold into the wind VarmintGuy

I understand what you guys are saying, but I can't help but side with Jackie. The repeated "Look at me! Look at me!" posts get a bit tedious too. I probably wouldn't have mentioned it, but since he did. I'll stand up with him. Regardless, both sides of this issue have been voiced. I'm out.

So I won't presume to attach motive to multiple posts about the same subject. In plain language, I don't know a damn thing about the OP's circumstances, and I don't care to guess. Unless he tries to affect my way of life, what he posts is his choice. But let us drill a bit deeper. If you side with Jackie, beyond complaining about them, do you propose a way to actively deal with posts that you and Jackie find tedious?

I was just wondering if anyone cared to venture onto said slope. I see some multiple posts about the same rifle. I don't know why, and don't care to guess. Sleep well yourself, sir.

Jackie Treehorn,
In your worldview it is apparently acceptable to ask strangers to publicly explain their actions. In fact, you demand that they do so. It appears, although I cannot be sure, that you also want them to admit that their actions are unacceptable, not only to you, but to the general public. It also appears, although again I cannot be sure, that you would like them to do some introspective self-exploration into the underlying reasons for their actions. Finally, whether I am correct or not about those last two things, you want them to change their behavior. Of that, I am sure.
Fine, let’s play by those rules. I’d like to ask you some questions.
What would be your perfect outcome in this specific situation?
Is there more than one outcome that you would like to see occur?
If this outcome (or outcomes) were to occur, how would it benefit you?
Would this perfect outcome give you personal satisfaction?
Would you also like to receive some acknowledgment from the other participants in this online discussion for causing this perfect outcome?
I could ask you a bunch of “why?” questions, but I won’t. If others want to explore those, then they can jump in.

I'm curious as to why Bushmaster1313 is so needy for attention from strangers. This has been a pattern from "him" for a few years. It's a basic question that he won't answer due to some psychosis. Sort of like your insecurity for becoming angry with me for asking. He has started FIFTEEN threads since 2011 regarding this rifle: https://www.24hourcampfire.com/ubbt...riod-scope-for-1949-model-70#Post5815411https://www.24hourcampfire.com/ubbt...19541/three-pre-64-model-70s#Post6019541https://www.24hourcampfire.com/ubbt...ying-pre-64-winchester-poker#Post6022651https://www.24hourcampfire.com/ubbt...279339/old-bob-meets-new-bob#Post6279339https://www.24hourcampfire.com/ubbt...with-iron-sights-and-diopter#Post6946989https://www.24hourcampfire.com/ubbt...t-for-my-transition-model-70#Post7255981https://www.24hourcampfire.com/ubbt...49-win-model-70-short-action#Post7295952https://www.24hourcampfire.com/ubbt...my-1949-257-roberts-model-70#Post7308421https://www.24hourcampfire.com/ubbt...my-1949-257-roberts-model-70#Post7308423https://www.24hourcampfire.com/ubbt...oping-three-pre-64-model-70s#Post8194729https://www.24hourcampfire.com/ubbt...d-scope-for-my-1949-model-70#Post9219911https://www.24hourcampfire.com/ubbt...report-1949-m70-257-roberts#Post13024530https://www.24hourcampfire.com/ubbt...0-257-roberts-leupold-m8-3x#Post13073259https://www.24hourcampfire.com/ubbt.../simple-scope-setup-for-bob#Post13059775https://www.24hourcampfire.com/ubbt...icial-i-am-in-love-with-bob#Post13832959This doesn't include the responses he's made to someone else's thread where he essentially bangs the drums again. It doesn't count his repetition for his other guns over which he's harangued everyone; i.e., the Ruger No. 1 RSI, Savage 99G, Winchester 97, pre-64 Featherweights, etc. This is a LONG DAMNED WAY FROM NORMAL to keep soliciting attention from strangers. He also has a pretty cool thread on elephant ivory: https://www.24hourcampfire.com/ubbt...he-new-ban-on-elephant-ivory#Post8898683And a need for more hunters in New Jersey: https://www.24hourcampfire.com/ubbt...e-more-hunters-in-new-jersey#Post9421573

Jackie Treehorn,
I'm not sure what you mean by "insecurity", or how such would lead to me becoming angry with you. I am angry at you only in that I have an aversion to bullies, and so far you appear to me to be one. You are undoubtedly tenacious. Your documentation of Bushmaster1313's posts are proof of that.
I have never disputed your "evidence."
I specifically and intentionally have not asked you any "Why are you doing this?" questions (unless you count my rhetorical "Why?" when I used strike through and substitution in phrases you originated.)
I asked some straightforward questions about what outcome, or outcomes you seek, how such outcomes would benefit you, and what you hope to gain from those outcomes.
Simple questions that you have not addressed.

Simple questions that you have not addressed. Bushmaster1313 is quite obviously not bullied by me, so your "argument" gets deflated. Let Bushmaster1313 answer why he craves the adulation of strangers. Every few weeks we get "treated" to this nonsense of "I love my rifle," "Look at my rifle," "I like my rifle," "I'm glad I bought my rifle," "I like to shoot my rifle," and on and on and on. That's not normal behavior for any stable person.

^^^^^^^ Being a bully is based on how you behave, not how successful you are at intimidating those you attempt to bully. But whatever. You're not a bully. Happy now?
Concerning Bushmaster1313, you are repeating yourself. I, and I expect everyone else, got it the first time. Certainly by the second or third time.
My questions to you remain unanswered. Do I need to repeat them?

My questions to you remain unanswered. Do I need to repeat them? I already answered and I cannot improve your (lack of) reading comprehension. Let Bushmaster1313 answer the question posed to him. Please forgive my lack of reading comprehension. I see now. Here are some things you wrote: Why the constant and repetitive need for attention from strangers? Life's too short. Let Bushmaster1313 answer that.
That doesn't answer WHY DO YOU KEEP DOING THIS? Do you not receive enough attention elsewhere?
I'm curious as to why Bushmaster1313 is so needy for attention from strangers. This has been a pattern from "him" for a few years. It's a basic question that he won't answer due to some psychosis.
So the only outcome you desire is for him to explain why he repeatedly posts about the same rifle? That's it? My "lack of reading comprehension" is due to the fact that I was sure you wanted more outcome than that. I do believe he answered you: I admit to having fun, showing off and exhibiting pride.I guess he likes to do that more than once, and apparently with the same rifle. But as long as we are talking about what "is a LONG DAMNED WAY FROM NORMAL" (your words), you might check yourself. Because you are the one who is keeping a record of Bushmaster1313's posts or spending the time to search and document them. Some would call that obsession. In fact, I will. You are obsessed. He is living rent free in your head.I'm done. Bitch all you want. Say what you will about me. I don't care. We agree on one thing, and that is that life's too short. I'm going back to being a useful member of the 'Fire. If you want to check my posts to see if I meet your standards, feel free. To everyone else: Please forgive my overly taking this guy to task. I have already mentioned that I have a low tolerance for bullies, so I got a bit carried away.

Nice setup 1313, me being traditionally retarded, I'd lose the lw talleys on that old rig, a nice sleek set of S&K's or Conetrols would do me just fine.

I love pre-64's to death, but agree with some (most?) here that there's no harm-no foul in using up to date mounts and scopes on them. One doesn't wreck the originality of the rifle after all, and if one mounts a scope then evidently one intends to use it, so why not? The best "period scopes" from two or three generations ago don't hold a candle to most current mediocre scopes.
I'm old enough that I consider all pre-64 M70's to have been born in the "modern" era. What I consider old is stuff made in the 20's and before.

Bush what was your thinking behind switching out the old Weaver K3 to the Leupold M8 3x ?
Do you have side by side picture so we can see exactly how the rifle compares in beauty with each scope.
Thanks....Beave😎

Weaver is a K2.5 from 1949 and although bright and clear it exhibits significant parallax.
The Leupold M8-3X has a touch more power and a lot less parallax

About 3 years ago I bought a nice Lyman Alaskan with mounts for an M70 from the classified here. I thought about offering it to the OP for his "Bob", but then a M70 .257 showed up in the classifieds within my price range and voilà, the Alaskan is now on my "Bob"! Not as pristine as the OPs it's gonna make a sweet vintage whitetail rig.

My collecting may not be someone else's idea of it, either.

i have friend who has a Winchester 70 pre 64 in a 257 Roberts - i have a couple of new Ruger #1`s 257 Roberts in Mannlichers still in the box we are close to a trade deal. yes the 257 Roberts cartridge is such a overlooked cartridge by the rifle manufactures and that is a real shame but at my place and family hunting the ladies and soon grandkids will and do use this cartridge ! May the 257 ROBERTS remain a favorite deer rifle cartridge ! good luck this fall ,Pete53

Feel free to continue to annoy with pre-64 stories and pics. I traded two guns that I did not want plus $100 to an FFL for a very low number .308 Winchester 88 in exceptional condition that I thought I wanted. After shooting the 88 once I traded it plus a Leupold scope to an FFL at a gunshow for a Winchester 97 factory riot gun: The 97 is one of my keepers. The story of how I acquired my Winchester 21 is boring, but here it is: My bid on Gunbroker was the high bid.

^^^ Had been looking for years with no luck for a 21 at a price I could afford with a beaver tail forearm, vent rib and M/F barrels to use at the trap line.
When the above 21 showed up on a no reserve Gunbroker auction with a reasonable starting bid, and an FFL seller who took credit cards and accepted returns, I bid up to my comfort zone and it was the high bid. Credit card payment was important as it provided a significant protection against fraud.

If an auction ends at an inconvenient time for the masses, that's probably a good thing. Hint.
