+1 on the Ruger 77/44, I have owned two of them my scope of choice has been a Leupold 4x Compact though if I were to set up another I would go with the 2-7x Compact. I added a Pachmyer Decelerator recoil pad as the Ruger pad is a joke.

Inland,

If you want to go "Old School". Uberti chambers the .44 mag in their reproduction 1873's.

I love mine.

If your going to need an optic or red dot get yourself the Marlin 1894 44mag and don't look back. Marlins are a snap to mount optics on. They are simpler to take down and clean than Winchester/Browning designs, and WWG has parts available to tune your Marlin.

I will be hunting with my 44 carbine this year in Ohio in Wayne National Forest. Shots in the big timber there are from 15-30 yards generally. We always joke its almost hand to hand combat. The farthest shot in 28 years I have taken is 70 yards. I been using a Marlin lever in 444. I wanted to use this carbine for some time. I think this year is the year.

This sounds exactly like where I used to hunt. I used a peep-sighted 94 Marlin in 44 Magnum one year and it worked like a champ. Never had feed problems at all. If I were to specialize in hunting thick cover, that rifle would be hard to beat.

Use premium bullets in any 44 Magnum rifle. Most factory ammo is loaded for handguns. When you move the bullet 300 fps faster it may not hold together.

Buff Bore’s 44 mag Deer Grenades with their 240-gr. softpoint and a hollow point you could drink tea from show on the box about 1550 fps for a handgun. I was somewhat startled when chrono’d out of my Marlin ‘94’s 20” tube, they were in the 1925 fps range and regularly printed in the 1.5” range for three shots at a 100 yds. Depending on the actual function of that bullet on impact, that seems quite a good 44 mag deer load.

I got my 77/44 at the end of the season this year. Shot one small buck with it with 240gr gold dots. Ive loaded cast and jacketed bullets and it shoots them all equally well. I need to order the volquartson sear and spring for it. Perfect for where I hunt as getting a shot past 100yds is rare. Hold one and you will like it. Just bought 2boxes of 270gr deep curls that I wanna load up and try.

My Marlin 1894 .44 bought a few years ago (Remlin) has benn 100% reliable with handloads and factory. It shoots really well with the Hornady 240 XTP.

I installed the volquartsen sear on my 77/357 and it dropped the trigger pull from 5.5# to just shy of 3# and got rid of all the trigger creep. After the install the safety was quite a bit stiffer but after about 30 minutes of polishing up the contact surfaces with lapping paper I got nearly back to normal.

I've always shot 240 grain JSP or JHP factory ammo, mostly Remington brand, and found it to be an accurate sure killer when the deer were shot through the lungs at reasonable ranges. It isn't an bang/flop killer, but the soft bullets expand well and typically penetrate through and through leaving an obvious blood trail in its wake if they don't hit a major bone.

+1. My Ruger 44 Carbine is very accurate with white box Winchester 240 gr JSP's and is very effective on deer (longest shot has been 90 yds).

I have a very nice and classy Ruger Number 1 single shot .44 Magnum that shoots very well and is like new with box and papers. I intend to sell it (got another Number 1 in .405 and don't need two of them) and would make you a good deal on it if you are interested. By the way, I have owned 2 77/44's and neither would shoot well. I would be reluctant to ever take a chance on a 77/44 again unless I could wring it out on the range before buying.

Shrap- I have the very same thing - could not imagine parting with it. Beautiful gun with a terrific action. Fun to carry.

OP- for whatever reason that 44mag is one rifle I don't reload for. I tested several factory brands and weights and the Hornady Leverevolution ammo (225grain I believe) shot best BUT...I was never happy with its performance on game. I went to different bullets and but am awaiting results. One thing I found when re-testing was that the '92 just didn't like lighter bullets- at all. Seemed to fling them very wild. I am wondering if others have seen similar things with pistol cartridges being shot out of 20" barrels? Get over 200 grain and things iron out.

I live in Michigan in the lower p (limited zone / slug zone) If you get a 44 mag carbine, I know a boat load of guys that shoot the Winchester White Box 240 grain sp, from Wlley world or wherever in the limited (slug zone) and it works like a champ. Ruger semi auto carbine, marlins, rossis, cva's, etc.

If you want to reach out and touch something, I have a TC Encore with a custom 460 S&W bbl on it with a fixed 6x scope on it. A true 300 yard rifle. I will sell it to you as I am getting out of the Lower P. deer game. A 300 grain bullet starting at 2200 really puts the stomp on those big bucks. The gun is set up for sitting (its heavy) so the recoil is not bad. If your interested PM me, we can talk prices, and/or you can meet me at my gun club and shoot it. I have never shot light bullets in it but am quite confidant you could get a 250 grainer to go 2500 fps or more. .

Good luck.

I have 2 Rossi 92's. Neither in 44 mag but one is in 45 colt. I load 300 grain GC lee bulets in that rifle with a full charge of H110. It is an accurate package, but it did have a flaw. The flaw was that the step adjuster was ground flat and it would bounce down on each shot. I had to make a saw tooth one, slightly longer.

Gotta laugh, " Never had the money for one when I saw one" we must be related, same story here but last fall I found a really cherry 1894 Marlin made in 1972 in 44 Mag for $500 and I bought it rfn. Irons are fine but I picked up a 1.5 x 4.5x and Weavered it on there for developing loads. Maybe it will stay on there and maybe it won't. Either way it is a slick rig that shoots fine with either sight system and doesn't fling my brass to Hell and gone. Get some meat with it this fall. MB
