Working on a friends CRF rifle with a fixed ejector and am having some issues and need advice. First, the rifle doesn't feed properly. When a cartridge comes up from the magazine its only half under the extractor. If you pull the bolt back without going into battery it leaves the cartridge on the follower. Pushing it into battery fully does seat the cartridge under the extractor properly.
Next issue is ejection. It will eject a loaded cartridge perfectly...but empty brass ejects very weak if at all. Very strange. Any thoughts?

In Richard Mann's book about the Scout Rifle, he said that not all Ruger 77's actually operate as CRF. They look like them but don't always act like them.

First problem: typical without adjustment IME. The idea of CRF is to lessen the chance of a double feed. Second problem: Does the ejector come up fully? Are you working the bolt slowly or rapidly? I have one CRF rifle that will drop a fired case back on top of the follower/loaded cartridges if I work the bolt slowly/gently.

I have one CRF rifle that will drop a fired case back on top of the follower/loaded cartridges if I work the bolt slowly/gently. A good CRF shouldn't do that either. I should take a video of how my m1917's and pre 64's work. If your CRF is dropping the cartridge on the follower or loaded cartridges below it, your tension is not right on the extractor.. On a good CRF, the rim of the cartridge will pop up in to the extractor as you push the bolt forward (at any speed) and grab and hold it securely.... I'm wondering if the OP's rifle is an earlier M77, that wasn't full on "CRF"? The tangers were a hybrid that looked like a CRF with a big claw extractor, but acted more like a pushfeed... Then the early m77 MkII rifles had to be modified to be a CRF and then Ruger later made them full on CRF. Why they didn't do this to begin with, is beyond me...
I try to stick with the basics, they do so well. Nothing fancy mind you, just plain jane will get it done with style. You want to see an animal drop right now? Shoot him in the ear hole. BSA MAGA

Early around 1990, 77 MK 2 had a lip on the bottom of the bolt that prevented control feed.
Ruger would change out bolt for about 2 years, for free.
After that you had to buy new bolt or remove the bottom lip on the bolt, upsetting as they were advertised and sold as control feed.

Remove it, increase slightly the bend between the attachment area and the tail. Reassemble and test..

I am curious on this and hope you can solve the problem. I know Ruger states they now offer a controlled round feed rifle, but they are different then my CRF Mod. 70's, Springfield 03A3 and Mauser. Maybe I will ask Mule Deer his thoughts.
