Some or all of 1895's had case colored buttplates, and some or all of early 1899's had case colored buttplates.
Anybody have more information on case colored buttplates than this? It's pretty vague at this point.
1) Did all 1895's have case colored buttplates? 2) Did all early 1899's have case colored buttplates? 3) When did case colored buttplates stop?
Hardly ever seen this mentioned. And there's few early guns with enough condition to even see case color on the buttplate.
Tell us what you have.. I know for sure it continued up to end of 1902, I wouldn't be surprised if it went to 1904 or even 1908.

Yep, not something we remember being discussed. And early rifle buttplates almost never have the condition to tell what they were.
Saw a high condition rifle that sold at auction recently with serial number 69.xxx that had a blued buttplate. So it may not have lasted very long.

Can’t figure out how to include photo, but have nice 1899B, 32-40 cal 26”bbl. from 1904 with most of the case color on the buttplate. Last month came across an 1899A 20” heavy bbl. in 303 in the same condition from 1908. I suspect they continued on.
Nice, guys! Thanks, Keith, I hadn’t been sure if the case color would show on the back. Might make it easier to get info from rats.
Tomygun, there is an Images forum at the bottom of the list of forums, and you can upload full sized photos there. Let us know when you get them uploaded, and we can link them in here.

Serial number 36.844, 1902. Thinking this is original buttplate colors.
