While researching loads and testing COAL for my new 270 WSM rifle, I realized that some of the new brass I had bought for this caliber didn't fit in the chamber properly (making bolt handle hard to close) confused The brass is made by Federal and the rifle is made by a very reputable European manufacturer. This was without seating any bullets so I thought the brass length is to long. I checked the case lengths and they were within specs. Next I checked the average base-to-shoulder length of a set of "OK cases" and compared with a set of "not-feeding cases". There was a noticeable difference in the average length of the two sets: The no-feeding ones were about 0.1mm to 0.15mm longer than the others on average.

To solve this problem, I full-length-sized some of the non-feeding cases but I realized that my die didn't change the shoulder position!! shocked This implies that the brass is within SAAMI specs so to make the die push the shoulder back, I filed the bottom of my die using a piece of sand paper. After a couple tries, I got the die shortened enough so that it now pushes the shoulder back by about 0.2mm and the sized cases all fit the rifle chamber. laugh

My experience seems to be consistent with the so-called Delta-L issue:

Has anybody else experienced a Delta-L problem? confused cool

I loaded a set of rounds using the Federal brass I described above and tested them at the shooting range a few days ago. The new 270 WSM rifle + scope + ammo proved very accurate and I am very pleased with the results.

Here is a picture of loaded rounds:

And here is the 100 yard test target:

The 6 shots on the top of the target represent my starting loads of 62 grain and 63 grain. (The flyer shot is likely the first shot out of clean cold barrel). After these shots I adjusted the scope and continued firing the 64 grain load (center), 65 grain load (bottom left) and 66 grain load (bottom right). The powder is N560. All groups are practically good but the 64 grain load seems to be the best and had the lowest velocity spread too. This load shoots at around 3000 f/s. My maximum load of 66 grain gave 3150 f/s. These are not maximum velocities that can be achieved by 270 WSM but are quite adequate for hunting.

Has any body else used Barnes 110 grain TTSX in 270 WSM? What are your experiences? I am thinking of trying a faster powder (e.g. N550) next.

PS. The federal brass I am using is the heaviest brass among all my calibers!! Each case weighs around 238 grain! For comparison, my RWS 300 WM brass which are much longer weigh around 217 grain confused laugh

I have obtained excellent results with the 110 and 130 gr TTSX bullets. I settled on the 130 gr just because I'm old school enough that I like more weight.

You may want to try H4350 with the 110 gr bullets. FWIW, it has been my experience that I get my best accuracy when using the TTSX bullets near the high end of the velocity range. With the 110 gr that is in the 3500+fps range. For the 130 gr TTSX I am getting my best accuracy with RL26 and ave velocity of 3333fps.

Sizing die issues are not uncommon with the WSM cartridges.

Thank you for your comments. I agree that the 130gr TTSX would be a more "classic" choice but this 110 gr bullet still looks long enough and tough enough to penetrate well on its intended game (deer, sheep, etc). I had used it in my 270 win rifle before so I decided to try them in the new 270 WSM rifle too. The rifle + the 2.5-10X Swarovski scope weigh about 10lb making the 110 grain bullet at 3000 f/s a joy to shot (no felt recoil!)

This rifle comes with a 2nd barrel in 300WM. I am setting up this other barrel with a lower power scope (1.5-6X) for larger game. The 270 WSM barrel with the 100 grain TTSX will be used for medium and small game such as deer and sheep. laugh
