Imagine the fines if four sports fishermen got caught with 10,000 pounds over their limit! I do not consider the illegal seized fish as part of the fine because it arose from illegal acts and never should have been killed.

Four Homer men fined for illegal commercial fishing in 2018

By The Associated Press | Posted: Fri 4:55 PM, May 31, 2019 | Updated: Fri 5:19 PM, May 31, 2019

ANCHORAGE, Alaska (AP) - Four Homer men convicted of illegal commercial fishing last year have been fined.

Alaska State Troopers say in July, the men fished illegally in closed waters of Dog Fish Bay or drove salmon from closed waters to open waters.

District Court Judge Margaret Murphy on Wednesday found 66-year-old Mark Roth and 63-year-old Eric Winslow guilty of driving salmon from closed waters and failing to provide information to a fish transporter.

She fined Roth $11,000 with $7,500 suspended and Winslow $11,200 with $7,500 suspended.

Thirty-six-year-old Paul Roth and 40-year-old Robert Roth were convicted of commercial fishing in closed waters and other misdemeanors. Paul Roth was fined $4,000 with $2,000 suspended and Robert Roth was fined $4,000 with $2,500 suspended.

The fishermen forfeited 10,000 pounds of salmon to the state.

Another case from Kodiak of exactly the same crime, but for dungeness crab instead of salmon... That is a fairly heavy whack...

Crab fisherman fined for fishing after season closed

By Associated Press | Posted: Fri 4:26 PM, Feb 01, 2019

KODIAK, Alaska (AP) — A Kodiak crab fisherman convicted of fishing during a closed season was handed a hefty penalty.

Alaska State Troopers say 47-year-old Raleigh Eager was fined $25,000 and ordered to forfeit 156 Dungeness crab pots.

Alaska Wildlife Troopers on Nov. 2, 2017, pulled and inspected 156 commercial crab pots belonging to the fishing vessel Silver Fox and operated by Eager.

The Dungeness season had ended two days earlier.

The pots were baited and in fishing configuration.

Troopers seized the crab pots and transported them to Kodiak.

Eager on Jan. 15 pleaded guilty to five counts of commercial Dungeness crab fishing during a closed season.

The crabber was justly punished.

The Roths (family affair?) were not. Should have been full fines and forfeiture of gear.

That's what happens with wanton, egrarious poaching of game animals for private use, much less if it is a commercial venture.

Fish are different?

Why do judges fine X, but suspend Y? I mean if you want em to pay 5K, then fine em that. Not 15K and suspend 10K....WTF Over? SNAFU again.

Actually, that just structures what will happen if they are caught in a given period of time breaking laws.

The suspended fines will usually be automatically be reinstated if they are caught.

And that often translates to the perp mind as, "Don't get caught!", not, "Don't do that stuff no-more".
