Boat is a tiny inflatable most would use as a way to get to shore in a protected area. Cannot imagine the "joy" pulling shrimp pots from it...

ANCHORAGE (AP) - The Coast Guard is searching waters east of Whittier after a small boat with no one on board was spotted in the area.

A 10-foot blue and gray Zodiac was reported adrift at 7:30 a.m. Monday in Passage Canal.

The boat carried fishing gear, line, oars and cat food, which can be used as shrimp bait. The boat had no motor and no identifying numbers on the hull.

The agency has not received a distress call but command duty officer Mike McNeil says crews are responding as though someone fell out.

The Coast Guard launched a Jayhawk helicopter from Kodiak, a response boat crew from Valdez and an auxiliary crew out of Whittier to search.

The Coast Guard is asking anyone with information about the boat to call.

I wonder if a boat might have sank out there and they were trying to get off it? Kinda weird to have a dighy like that out there with no motor.

That's ok, I'll ass shoot a dink.

Tiny thing, yup... but I doubt it was anything more than someone thinking he could shrimp from a dinghy. And he had shrimping stuff in the boat.

The no motor thing is a bit odd don't you think?

If they got tangled in a line - which would be easy to do throwing pots from a 10 foot zodiac - they might be pretty hard to find.

Quite the opposite... those tiny things do not have much intended range and rowing to shore is pretty standard.

Owner found; everyone safe.
It was windy as hell last night in passage. Sound was pretty calm but when we came back into sight of Whittier late evening it was gusting 30+.

I can see why the guy that lost his boat would not want to tell anyone... they launched a lot of craft to find him...
