Polyurethane. Don't forget to put it on thick enough that you get runs and drips. Then it'll look just like a Walmart special that you paid too much for.

I have left all of mine untreated as they are safe queens but if I were to put anything on them other than good gun oil like G96 it would be just wax.

How "new" do you mean? Specifically, an old rifle in "new" condition, or a recently manufactured rifle?

Basically, it is a spray on commercial finish in Matte.
The lack of "depth" is mostly due to the lack of light refraction due to the matte finish.

If you want more depth you will need a bit if gloss to the surface. A good trick to use on such modern stock finishes is good old fashioned plain white tooth paste.

Rub some on a cloth and rub it in to get the desired shine. Wipe it off with a damp cloth & then wipe it with some Armor- all. It should do the trick.

Be carefull NOT to get it in the checkering..

Got it. Many here, me being one, would strongly recommend not messing with the finish on a nice Pre '64, especially a Super! I'm not sure I'd overly mess with a Classic New Haven gun either. But especially not a Pre '64.
