Just saw this over on Accurate Reloading. Looks like SAA is making it very expensive to take a gun to Africa. Take two guns round trip to Namibia and fly on SAA and it will cost you $640 in addition to your normal airfare. Just flying to Joberg and it will cost you $400. Just another effort to fleece hunters by corrupt African officials. http://forums.accuratereloading.com/eve/forums/a/tpc/f/8121043/m/1261020252

Renting or borrowing rifles isn't acceptable to me, but avoiding SAA and SA entirely is no hardship.

I flew Delta to JBerg but SAA to Windhoek. They were a PITA then. They took ammo out of our checked luggage and checked it seperate in zip lock bags. Crazy Bastids

You can fly Delta/KLM to Amsterdam and then take a flight to Windhoek. The flight stops in Angola, but you do not disembark the plane. The flight to/from Windhoek is everyother day. Can always connect from Windhoek to other countries.

I flew Delta to Joberg and it was an additional $200 to take my rifles. You can fly Delta/KLM to Amsterdam and then take a flight to Windhoek. The flight stops in Angola, but you do not disembark the plane. The flight to/from Windhoek is everyother day. Can always connect from Windhoek to other countries. I’ve been told to avoid Europe at all costs when traveling with firearms.

Qatar Airways flies to Windhoek. I flew Qatar business class to Africa in 2017 and 2018 and found them to be excellent in all respects. Follow their simple rules and transporting your firearms will not be a problem. They do not charge extra when transporting firearms. I recommend avoiding SAA and Joberg if at all possible.

I've never tried to take guns to Africa, but I know first hand Joberg is full of thieves. I also know first hand South African Air Customer Service is populated by a-holes who are very polite while telling you to go screw yourself. The way South Africa is headed, it ain't gonna get better.

Yes we were surprised with a $100 per gun fee on our way home. We used Travel with Guns and there was no mention of this additional fee at all. I didn't arrange the travel plans as the guy I went with had been there before. This was from Victoria Falls to Joberg on South African Air. They also know where the cameras are and make sure they escort you to an area and "suggest" a tip.
