Great photos of a bygone era.

Sexy lady, but not designed for someone 6'3" tall. She damn near killed me.

I was 7 years old when she was brought up the Cape Fear into Wilmington and can remember watching her being towed in. My mother had taken me to someplace in downtown Wilmington where we were able to watch her arrive.

That photo of the six gun salvo and the shells in flight reminds me of what my father told me about the pre-landing bombardments at Tarawa, Kwajalein and Eniwetok. He was on an LST and he said that even at night you could see the red hot shells in flight as they arced toward their targets.

Wonder what the Bismarck crew would have thought seeing a couple of North Carolina types on the horizon. Don't think they'd like that.

Love the U.S. Battleships. They really are majestic.

The launch of that plane from 1916 is very cool. Today’s pilots complain about landing on a moving carrier but how the hell did they recover that aircraft after it was airborne. 😳......on the roller coaster rails they used to launch it?jk

Just looking at that photo from 1916 it’s incredible to think of how far naval aviation has come in 100 years.

Battleships are awesome, massive firepower, good speed, and real style!

AcesNeights , the planes landed on their floats and the crane picked them up and put them on the catapults. That's the purpose of the cranes on the fantails of battle ships.

I have lost count of the times I have walked her decks. She escorted a convoy my father was on in
1944 going to New Caledonia. It was very special to take to visit her. He got very quiet walking her decks.
My wife contributed to her purchase as a child. Obviously, she means a lot to my family.

I was in Wilmington in March. I made a point to visit her. She was one of the smaller battleships of the WW-2 era.

I've been on the North Carolina twice. I'm still amazed that much steel could float.

Looks like that ship was riveted together. I thought they were welding them in 1937.
