What’s the story with mini mausers?

For awhile I’ve had a notion about a nice little mini action with a 20ish” barrel chambered in something like 6.5 Grendel. Light and trim, plenty for deer, and very low recoil.

Most minis aren’t really Mausers though, are they? If I recall, somebody did a beauty in 220 Russian some years back and shared it here?

what is called a mini mauser, regardless who imported it, Interarms, KBI, Remington, Kavar, et al, are all the same. they are push feed actions that use a fairly long hooked spring as the extractor. they are substantially smaller than what we call standard mausers. with a bit of work the can be made into nice rifles. did one years ago for a client in 6.8 spc for his son.

CZ makes one

I've had two. They are fine little rifles begging for custom work....

The mini mauser action is a copy of the short Sako action

I really like the CZ with the glaring exception of the overdone billboarding on the action and the dog azz ugly bottom metal.
The Howa bottom metal aint a prize either.

Didn’t know that about them being Sako copies.

If you can find a CZ M1 you'll find the bottom metal more to your liking I suspect.

Yup, the 527 M1 has a three round magazine (flush with the bottom of the stock). Neat little rifles, usually in a black synthetic stock, though they sold a few with walnut.

Hey, I've had two CZ one 223 & 204. Great guns, I'm left handed & if they ever make a LH 6.5 grenade I'll have another one. Have had one zastava in 223 from Charles dally LH. Nice stock but shiny. One straight from zastava is like a kit gun. Ya have to finish it yourself, they don't feed like a cz. If your right handed cz already has one out in 6.5 & 7.62 x 39!! They also made some RH in 222. 17 Remington & probably more I've missed. Good luck. Bill out. 🐾👣🇨🇦

Not only are they clones of the small Sako actions, the Howa is a clone of the larger action as is the vaunted Nosler.....

I think somebody posted a link to photos of my Zestava Mini. It was bought as a barrelled action in 7.62X39. I chambered it in 270X39AI, basically a 270PPC. It was a real accurate shooter and and an excellent white tail rifle for a young person. I re barreled it in 220 Beggs, Russian as it is the parent cartridge of the PPC. It was finished several years ago, but I've not fired it.

Not as a 270X39AI, so I see no reason for a problem with the 220 Beggs. One of these days I will know.

I've heard of folks trying it on longer action rifles.
When the lugs pass the cutout the bolt catches on it.
Hence the reason for the bolt guide on the Mauser.
That short an action may preclude that from occurring.

There's an outfit that will clean up the CZ guard and trim one mag for about $95, IIRC. Extra mags cost about $50 per. Sorry, but I lost the link when I sold mine, but a little google-fu will turn it up. The minor downside is that they coat or paint the guard after the work, not blue it.

Run- - - -do not walk away from the Zastava mini, particularly the Remington 799 version! It's a fake CRF action, and parts are virtually nonexistent. That's especially true of the extractor, which is a chronic failure item. It's also got an oddball metric barrel thread. I built a wildcat we called a ".257 Scooter" a few years ago, a .204 Ruger case necked up to .25 caliber. It turned out to be a nice little midrange deer rifle, but to get the velocity up to where the cartridge designer wanted (2800 FPS with a 100 grain bullet) we had to build it like a bench rest rifle. That included reducing the firing pin diameter to less than 1/16" and sleeving the bolt face to prevent pierced primers, using bench rest primers, and a few other fancy tricks. If I ever build another one, I'll use the CZ mini as my donor action.
